Tuesday Night with home movies of the British Royal Family

Yes, it is true. Our local Public Television station is showing "Princes of the Palace, three generations of British royal princes. Before I could change the station, Anne got interested, so here I sit at my computer, listening to Princes Charles, William, Harry, etc. and of course Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, on and on.
I understand that the "Royals" are considered quite passe' by many in England and revered by others. We have no royal family in the US, but many Americans, my wife apparently included, find the British royals quite fascinating.
I wonder how British myLotters feel about the royals? For that matter, I wonder how the rest of you feel, one way or the other about royalty.
Are they a waste of money for the British or an important tradition? Will they continue forever?

Truly she never has put a foot wrong, as you say. Can you expand on what purpose it is that they serve? It is such a foreign concept to me and costs the British public an enormous amount to support them all and the royal properties.

@JudyEv I suppose that there are many who like it and, perhaps, many who do not. But the apparent heir is pretty popular, I agree.

@JamesHxstatic Haha! Now you have me! I have to think now.
I have no idea how much they are supported by the public. I thought the Queen paid taxes now. They are good for morale. They support a great many causes and just lending their name to various causes encourages the public to support those. (Heaven help the rest!). But maybe you're right. There was a lot of talk about 'it' dying out with the Queen but with Wills and Kate such a hit at the moment perhaps it will go on a bit longer.

I find it a bit amusing that no one from England (unless @kandae11 is) has responded to this post as of yet.
I'm interested in history so I may watch the show just for the historical value.

@JamesHxstatic My favorite novels are those by Philippa Gregory - she writes about the Tudors as well as novels about life in the 19th and 18th centuries.

they, to me, seem like a waste of money, but then again I have no real idea what all they actually do. At the same time we have a president who is bleeding money to go golfing and let his wife and kid racks up bills in NYC and seems to be doing stuff, albiet harmful stuff so....

We certainly have no room to talk about extravagance at this point.

I am not a British myLotter but I find them quite fascinating too. I think that they are important tradition. As I knew a waste of money for the British for them is very little. England was so short time republic during Cromwell period. So they will continue, but whether forever nobody knows at that time.

That is very true. As long as the Brits are happy, it's a good thing.

@JamesHxstatic Wills and Kate are so popular! They live in media. So media will also prolong the Royal institution. I think they are the most popular royals among the rest ones.

@JamesHxstatic ~I would imagine that the British people must enjoy the Monarchy since I can only imagine that they are paying for it. They certainly can be entertaining.

I think they enjoy the lofty status though have less real power. It is said that Prince Charles is interested in environmental-friendly agriculture.

Yes he is. They have no real power, true, but appearances and style can mean a lot I suppose.

Well I think you have definitely touched on something there. The Queen is absolutely marvellous and takes her role with seriousness and does not put a foot wrong. She has outseen many Presidents and is an excellent diplomat. You talk about the cost of maintaining the Royal family have you ever thought of how much the US spends on maintaining the post of President and ex presidents? I think you might find that what you pay out to keep the President far out does the cost of the Royal family.
Our history of Royalty goes back to the year 827 and despite the brief interlude of Cromwell there has always been a King or Queen here. Not many countries can marvel at that. As you can probably tell I am a Royalist and firmly believe that they have served Great Britain well.

@JamesHxstatic I think perhaps us oldies are but I can not say the same for the youngsters in our country. We were brought up in different times when we stood for the National Anthem. These days I doubt many youngsters even know the words to it.

Oh yes, our former presidents do cost a lot and our current one with his dual households and Florida weekends is soaking up more than ever, I'm sure. Thank you for expressing a royalist view. I agree that the Queen is all you say. I have no idea whether the majority in your country are royalists or not, but am curious about that. Is your view a majority view?

I'm interested in the history of it & wondering exactly how it became what it is today. I find that it is interesting that it became a democracy, but still keeps its royalty. I don't, however, really pay attention to the actual people, the actual royalty. I have heard the show The Crown is good though! :-)

Peraonally, I can't imagine living with and paying for a monarchy that performs no useful function.

I too wanted to watch, but my husband nixed the idea--so we watched a bit of another show--I am not entranced by the Royals, but did watch The Crown recently, and this show had some original footage that I thought was interesting
