At Eye Level

A good way to communicate with small children is to squat or kneel down to their size, and be at their eye level. It is supposed to make you more connected. I saw a dad doing that with his pre school aged son. They were looking at a fast food menu. The dad was kneeling down with his arm around his son. Pretty soon, the son was kneeling down, as well. I guess to be like dad. It was cute. The final result was dad said "let's stand up". So then the little boy made his menu selection, reminding dad that he wanted "a side of ketchup" with his corn dog and fries. I enjoyed being able to watch those few minutes of dad and son interaction.

It was a great action to overhear. Dad was very patient with the little boy.

He had a really pleasant tone of voice, as well. I loved how he explained everything and was not in too much of a hurry.

I'm a little afraid if I do that I'll never be able to get back up!

You should see me when I have been on the floor in the classroom, but I am glad you do not.

It was sweet to see and hear. Too often we as adults get busy talking down to kids, both in a physical sense and in a critical sense. It was nice to hear these two just talking. Kind of reminded me of Opie and Andy in Mayberry,

You could sense that the little boy felt he could ask his dad about anything.

It is easier to talk in a good tone of voice and get the whole meaning of the discussion.
