The easy way to clean your dog's teeth

United States

The summer before last we discovered a growth on Ruby's leg, down near her foot. The vet said she would like to remove it before it got too big. Since it was not an emergency we asked if we could wait until the pool was closed since Ruby would not be able to swim after the surgery. I asked the vet about cleaning her teeth. She said she could do it at the same time. Her teeth got bad almost suddenly. I hated for her to have to stay under anesthetic longer than necessary, and she didn't have to. I can't remember if I saw a commercial or just saw the product in the store but I bought a box of Milk Bone Brushing Chews. Don't ask the price, I am not a price watcher...all I know is they are far cheaper than paying the vet to clean her teeth! I gave Ruby about three chews over the course of a week and when I checked her teeth they were shinny white....no tarter, it was totally gone. I now give her one a month and her teeth are beautiful shiny clean and no bad breath at all. If your dog has a tartar problem you might want to buy a box of these Milk Bone Brushing Chews...they work! Photo is mine

I remember that my niece gave something similar to her lab.

@AbbyGreenhill The professional cleaning was expensive and her dog did not like at all.

@LadyDuck I don't believe in putting dogs (or humans) thru pain/expense when there are other options.

Ruby loves them so it's easy to keep her teeth white....no doggie breath!

I saw this and wanted a result. Not sure this is one of so many out there. If you say they are good. Then I am going to buy it. I do not care what the price is.That does not bother me.Thank you for the result. How many a day you give Ruby this?

When I started her teeth were black so she got one three times a week - once her teeth were white I only give her on once a month. They work, or I wouldn't buy them...I've tried other things that did not work. Our "Ruby's" deserve them! I tried the dog truth brush/paste she wanted nothing to do with that mess!

My dog does not like treats like that for some reason. Does the rawhide work for teeth too or is it jsut a fun thing. He loves though

I won't give a dog rawhide every again - too many problems with rawhide. Get elk antlers - they are fantastic - and last and last - that's what Ruby gets. You can get them online at many different places.

@AbbyGreenhill what happened with the rawhide? Did it harm your dog?

I wonder if it's a new product. I don't remember seeing them in the dog aisle when I had a dog. I'm glad it was an easy fix for her teeth. I'm sorry she needs surgery for her foot.

She's had them for over a year and a half so I'm not sure when they came out. Her foot was operated on last year...she's all good.

Do they make them in different sizes for different sized dogs? Harley is still pretty little.

Yes, there are 3 sizes, maybe 4...I bought the ones for big dogs this time, but I have given her the small size many times she you get more in the pack!

@AbbyGreenhill Well im sure once Harley gets bigger we will have to buy the bigger one. But for now I am going to order her a box of the smaller ones on Amazon and see if she likes them.

That's good to know. When we had our blue heeler it would have so good to have these. He loved to eat the darndest things and his teeth were awful.

Excellent tip @AbbyGreenhill . How did Ruby's leg/foot turn out?
• United States
20 Apr 17
Fine, she took out the growth and had enough skin to sew her back together. Now it's just a memory.

@AbbyGreenhill That is great news. Did they test the growth and find out what it was?

As you say, whatever the cost, it will be cheaper than getting the vet to do it.

I tried those on the last dog and they didn't do much, so this time I tried the Milk Bone. The others probably would have worked since her tarter wasn't as bad as our previous dog.

I don't know how to brush dog's teeth so I always buy my puppy dog brushing chew. He always like to lick me and I can't stand it if he smell of his dog food.

@AbbyGreenhill That's why I gave him at night like a treat. And He loves it. The chew smells so good too.
