Junk and snacks on the farm

When I was between 2 yrs and 5yrs,I lived with my aunt on a farm in Ohio. Maybe why I never got sick till I smoked and ate junk food for years later on is because I started out like that. All day as I played I snacked on yummy snacks. at least I thought they were cause we seldom had candy and chips etc around. I would go into this grain building and roll around in wheat seeds like the one in the photo here. and even eat some. Not sure if that was good for me at all but they tasted good and sweet. not like wheat bread does. why it is so bitter to me today I have no idea. I would run through my aunts garden when she wasn't looking and pull up a carrot or eat a hand full of lettuce right fresh from the ground. Dirt and germs was never such a concern it seemed back then. lol. and never had a sick day till I was in my 20's after having 4 kids except for an occasional cold and my tonsils out at 6 yrs. they would dry out apples on the farm cause there would be big burlap sacks in the hallway at times and I would eat a few pieces. I know it sounds like I was always being starved but no, there was always food covered on the big long table most hours of the day. for anyone to eat. In fact I don't remember very many times seeing my aunt out of the kitchen, poor thing. Sad thing is these days I doubt many kids get these kind of snacks nor adults either. If we could go back to that how healthy we would all be. What did you snack on as a child?

I was raised in this manner too. We always had dried fruit, homemade jellies and jams, Fresh veggies and eggs from the chickens. It was not until I started school that I learned about junk food. It was not until I was around 16 that I started really eating junk food. After turning 16 and having a job I was able to eat out and purchase my own junk food. My parents never bought junk food. Unfortunately for me, I continued to eat it.

@rebelann yes makes for better health . everyone was healthier back then . more people cooked and raised good stuff to eat. there wasn't fast food at every corner either.

I suppose that makes me the lucky one, I can't recall going to a McDonalds until after I graduated High School, I got hooked on the french fries but couldn't afford them very often. I still lived at home so I got to eat mom's cooking all the time until I moved out.

Sounds much the same as my childhood. We were always eating right out of the garden. We would grab something and off we would go. Have a slice of mom's homemade bread with butter. It was great. We would grab something and head off to play.

only the years with my aunt was like that. i went to live back with mom at 6 yrs and we lived in the city. from there it was mostly bologna and toast, etc. because she and my step dad worked all week. but on weekends or times when he was home with me and the cook, we had good meals. plus eat out every Friday. he made great oyster stew that my mom didnt care for but i loved when it was just us. sometimes shrimp. like i was fondly remembering though that kind of snack eating was so good on the farm.

We almost never had any extra food, city kids. I was thrilled when I could have carrots or celery, apples or oranges. Once in a while we would eat pickles that grandma had canned. Bread and butter was good too.

Most of my snacks as a kid were fruit related. My parents owned a grocery store and there was always a lot of fresh fruit in the house. But they would also bring home a chocolate bar or two. And I was always outside running around or riding my bike so whatever I ate got worked off very quickly! I love hearing about your days on the farm! Farm life always appealed to me!

@chrissbergstrom that was likely from their own place. right? we traveled around and picked for other farmers all over. thats why we were called fruit tramps. lol. my step dad i had when i was 12 yrs. till 15yrs was running from the law and mom took me and went with. it was pretty scary but times when we traveled the same route with people we got to know so it was fun at times hanging with the other teens

Back when I was a child, I don't really fancy veggies. We had a small garden in the backyard where mom planted lots of them. My brother was the one who would pull any veggies from the plants and eat them just like that.

I remember that my Mom gave us half banana as a snack, sometimes apple slices, never garbage food. Kids are not hungry in our days because they do not move enough.

I think it's time to start asking why kids don't run around outdoors all day long. If they did, the food they ate wouldn't matter so much.

maybe but still these days the junk in our food would still not be healthy. might not even be able to do what we did for long
