Last Year's Excellent Movies

Many of last year's Oscar nominated movies are available on Netflix, but only on discs. I am glad that I kept that option, since we have been able to watch a few of them and have more on the way. We saw Best Picture winner "Moonlight," and I can see why it won. Great acting, but we actually liked "Lion " even better, with Dev Patel and based on the true story of a little Indian boy who wandered onto a train and was lost, for 25 years, adopted into a loving family as a child and eventually finds his birth mother. "Manchester by the Sea" (Casey Affleck, Best Actor) was great too, but the traumatized character he played was not endearing. We have "La La Land" ready to watch tonight, with "Hidden Figures" and "Fences" on the way soon. They have lots of old movies on discs to. I have "The Comedians" (1967) with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor ordered too, having just read the book. We much prefer movies to TV shows, but are also watching Season 3 of the great Amazon original series "Bosch," from Michael Connolly's novels. Movies at home are a great deal too. Do you watch more TV than movies?

We watch movies every evening, there are very few shows that we like. I cannot remember the film "The Comedians", I have to check, I like many movies with Richard Burton.

Same here Anna. I missed that old movie and just read the Graham Greene novel for the first time. I think that those two are perfectly cast for the parts. It is set in Haiti when the dictator, Papa Doc, ruled that poor country.

@JamesHxstatic Oh, this sounds interesting. Haiti is a very poor country and they seem not to find the right leader to get them out of their poverty.

Not me - but the kids and Hubby watch it all . We do have Netflix, but we also go to the library to borrow DVDs - a lot of libraries have great DVD collections now! And Hubby likes to collect his certain favorites. We do watch some TV on certain nights . . . the kids have their favorite reality TV shows .

all the oscar winners are amazing.. yes, Lion and Manchester by the sea bring lots of tears, no wonder they won the award. Mostly I watch movies on theater if I had chances and doing tv shows marathon on my laptop, which I like so much.. I don't really like to watch tv..

It is easier for me to watch the late night movies on television when I am in bed. I must get around to watching some of those you mentioned.

My husband and I just watched "La La Land" and "Lion" this week, and enjoyed them both. Another movie we enjoyed, and it surprised us, was "Passengers." We haven't seen "Hidden Figures," yet, but hope to see that one soon.

We saw La La Land last night and it was pretty good, but not up to best picture standards I thought, so am glad it did not win. Passengers does sound interesting too.
