At what age will a man finally say - No more, I can't do it again I'm too old?

Men think they are built to last and that's far from the truth. They remember how it used to be while figuring it can continue like that until the day they die. Not true, it has to end sooner than later. My husband finally agreed that he is too old to do it one more time so he is turning the job over to someone else. From now on he will take the SUV to the Chevy Dealer for oil changes and tire rotations. His grandfather owned a gas station/garage when my husband was a teen. That's where he learned to work on cars and anything else with an engine. He has always done work on his own vehicles...heck, he even saved me money by working on my car when we started dating. But with time and age comes sense, sometimes. He has now rotated his last tire and emptied his last oil pan. I would rather pay for the work to be done than to watch him pretend he is still young! Or he can have a grandchild come over and tell him what to do, be the foreman of the job I think to slung off a balancing weight from a tire the front shakes with a little speed and I need an oil change!

We live 850 miles from family. Grandson is only 5......by the time he could help it would be too late anyway We can pay for work to be done, even then he checks all the lugs when he gets home and tightens the one they didn't tighten properly.

You are right, I would not want to watch my husband do something like this. It's a hard work, it's a work for young people.

@AbbyGreenhill Our husband not always want to understand that they cannot do anymore what they did 20 years ago. It's time to slow down now.

@LadyDuck If we couldn't afford to pay for work it would be a different story.

It's not just age and out of shape it's the breathing issues too. He is adjusting to the fact he can't and doens't have to do it all.

That has to be a hard thing to do... let go! I don't know if it's more of a man thing or women get there too!!

Boy does this open up a can of worms I'm trying to keep the lid on. It's a touchy subject for those who deny their age and even more so when it comes to working for men. Many grow up believing they have to be the provider and those who have been at the same job all their life just don't know how to stop. To them, life is their job and their job is their life.

@WendySpickerman - my husband and I quit work in 2001 - he was 57 and I was 53 - so giving up a job was not hard for him at all... we wanted to be free to enjoy life while we were 'young'. Giving up working on a car is minor in the scope of his life!

I'd certainly agree

It is hard for them to admit sometimes that things are beyond them. Especially when it means it would save money if they did it themselves.

@AbbyGreenhill Certainly it seems you need to be a contortionist to get into some of the spaces.

@JudyEv There is so little room in these new engines he burned his arm pretty bad a year ago and that helped push him into letting others do the work. The first two years we had free oil changes, now we have to pay but it's worth it.

As long as I'm physically capable of doing something I'll do it...unless I have enough cash to pay others to do it for me

My husband changes the oil and the way he is, he will do it until he can no longer do it.

I know we are aging and we know we don't do a good of a job as we did ten years ago. I think it's time to hire a cleaning person to come in and to the heavy stuff!

Ha Ha! Are we married to the same man? My husband has always liked to work on our cars, and do many similar things. He is finally learning (at age 72) that he cannot do everything he used to do.

Oh, so that's where he goes when he leaves for days LOL!!! I knew a few years ago he isn't up to some of the things he could do before...it has taken him a little longer to 'get it'.

@AbbyGreenhill - I am relieved that my husband is starting to "get it," too. Sometimes, however, he still tries to do more than he can handle and ends up feeling exhausted!
