The Advantage of Living in the South

My Little Garden

I love to garden. When we first moved to South Carolina it was hard to adjust my time table to match the climate. Growing up in Minnesota the goal was to have the garden planted by Memorial Day. Here in South Carolina most gardens go in the first few weeks of April. I usually shoot for the middle of April. We have been caught with an unexpected frost in April more than once, and I hate replanting. I checked my garden before we headed to church this morning. I knew there were tomatoes but the summer squash was new. We’ll be harvesting from the garden within a week. I know many of you are still dealing with wet, dreary weather, but the sun will be out soon. Summer is right around the corner.

There are lots of advantages living in the South, gardening being one of many. I used to love my vegetable garden, but gave it up after the kids moved out. I only grow herbs now. The deer don't touch them!

@BettyB That I miss, so I pull weeds or divide perennials. Your garden looks great!

I don't have the big garden I used to have, and my garden is raised so its easier to work in, but I love to dig in the dirt.

If you could tell me which day is memorial day I can understand the difference better. In India, we are getting baked in hot sun, or boiled in our sweat.

Good luck with the garden. The weather is constantly changing back and forth lately.

I've read several posts where people are complaining about the non-stop rain. We have the opposite problem. We've had very little rain all winter and only a couple of showers this spring. I'm out watering almost every day.

@BettyB i never liked okra, too, even though now they're saying it's a wonder vegetable, for example, for diabetes

They're beans. I'm a southern transplant. Unlike most southerners, I hate okra. I have several garden gnomes protecting my garden.

I hope to see your harvest in a few days. It is dry season here in my country and fields are so dry.

@BettyB I remember my childhood days. We used to plant vegetables on the backyard.

It will be a while before the tomatoes are ready but we should be picking squash in another week or so.

We are still dealing with the wet and cool weather so seeing your pictures and hearing about a planted garden is music to my ears! We stopped planting vegetable gardens a few years ago as it became more work then it was worth as I don't like anything from the garden, only my husband does.

My garden is just a little raised bed. It's a hundred times easier to take care of a raised bed garden. I don't have much planted, just enough to have fun with.

I know what you mean, nobody here plants before the 15th of May, we had a frost last week.

@BettyB No, all my plants wait in the greenhouse, ready to be moved in the garden.

Spring will be moving into summer soon. I love this time of year but hate the heat in July and August.

We plant around Memorial day too. The rain stopped but there is still cold mornings and the chance of frost.

I remember a few frosts as late as the first of June when I lived in Minnesota. You're even farther north. I hope it warms up for you soon.

Summer is almost here but today it's about sixty degrees here. Your garden looks good. My sisters have their gardens out and will be picking vegetables soon. So would I if I didn't live in an apartment.

We considered moving into an apartment/condo when we downsized but I didn't want to give up the garden. It's little, but that's okay. A bigger garden would be more work than fun.

Some people love to garden, others don't. My garden is little. It's all I have the time and energy for. The raised bed does make it easier.

I love the spring and early summer but by the middle of July I hate it here. The heat and humidity are awful.

if you migrate to my area, you can plant all year round, but you will not like the heat and humidity.
