Sikkim, which joined the Indian Union as its 22nd state in 1974 has 600.000(6 Lakhs or 600 Thousands) residents, who depend on a single highway- NH10 to connect to other parts of India.
There is no separate rail line or air linkage.
This has caused hardships to many. Some have missed civil services exams, some patients have been delayed medical care.
However, an upcoming Greenfield airport at Pakyong, about 35km from the state capital Gangtok could relieve the residents.
Built at a cost of 300 crores, the airport at an altitude of 4,700 feet will be among the five highest airports in the country. The picture in the article link below shows how skillfully this is being built at a high altitude.
This airport will also boost tourism to the state.

People needing urgent and critical medicare, disaster victims, students who need to go to neighboring states for exams etc - all these call for Good infrastructure, which this new airport will hopefully provide for.
Also, it will be a big boost for tourism industry in Sikkim.

Yes @garymarsh6 this new airport will improve connectivity of Sikkim to the outer world, especially within India. I read that some people missed Indian Civil Services Exam- IAS(Indian Administrative Services)(loosely modelled on the British colonial civil services :) ) which they had to give in other parts of India owing to some disturbance or landslide on the only Highway link NH10 connecting Sikkim to rest of India.
Moreover, this airport will give a lot of boost to Domestic and International tourism.
