A successful trip to the Mennonite Farm Market in Englewood, Tennessee

United States
May 8, 2017 10:23am CST
We had not yet been to the Mennonite Farm Market in Englewood, Tennessee yet this season. Today was a nice day for a ride...it's not around the corner, more like 1 1/2 hours round trip - but worth that trip! I wanted strawberries and got them. They are cleaned, sliced and in the fridge. I got a pound of English peas, shelled and ready to be cooked. I picked up 3 patty-pan squash and 3 tomatoes. Oh, and a jar of homemade strawberry preserves. All the Mennonites work the farm and the store. One or two families make all the cookies and breads and they are out of this world! I always take a few photo when we go, but I am very careful not to take a photo of any Mennonites....that is highly frowned upon. Photo is mine. The empty space in the strawberry display - well, those berries are in my fridge!

I have picked up a small basket of strawberry from the garden this morning. I am glad that despite the weather they are here in May as their local name suggest (strawberries in dialect magioster from Maggio equal May).

@AbbyGreenhill There are several varieties of strawberries, I have three different in the garden and only one variety is ready to pick up now. The others come later.

@LadyDuck They only grow/sell one kind here that I know of. One year we had 40 plants, that didn't last long - we were novices to them and it was such a mess we got rid of them. My grandfather was a strawberry farmer and my father was in the fields picking when he was old enough to walk. He worked those fields until he went to college. He started growing them at his house in New Jersey and they did amazing. I never really paid attention to the work, only the eating!

Theirs are usually in way earlier than the ordinary gardener...I guess they have some 'pull'.

I was going to buy a pound cake for the berries but we just ate them by themselves. Super sweet and not a rotten on in the bunch.

The only Mennonites I know of around here are in Juarez, they speak a strange mix of Spanish, German and English. They are also kinda unsociable. I wonder if that's because they're Mexican citizens, I wondered if the ones up your way are like that too.

I think that what they're speaking when I see them shopping at Sams @AbbyGreenhill the men always look stern. I can't recall their wives and daughters even looking at anyone. I can't imagine what kind of life those women lead.

When they first opened a few years ago they didn't talk much. Now they are a little more friendly. They speak German when they don't want you to know what they are saying!

@rebelann They all work their butts off - we can see them in the fields, hand weeding, in the hot sun with all those dark heavy clothes on. The kids, and there are lots of kids, work or plan right beside them.

Apparently there is a small Mennonite town close to where we live. Must pencil it into our calendar too. We seem to do nothing but work on our "farm" and it's time to enjoy someone elses!!

I used to stop at a Mennonite store when we would go to Jackson twice a month to see Tony`s sister that was put there in a "special" nursing home. Prices were high but the food was good!

@andriaperry If there were farms selling produce in this county I would do that - this is farming community but farming for horses, cows and hay.

Price are good for what you get - you can't beat their stuff unless you grow it at home and no can anyone grow lettuce that huge! I don't mind paying more for quality...the Ingles sells junk produce.

Fresh vegetables and fruits always taste better when purchased at farmers markets. I wonder why the Mennonites don't like to have their pictures taken?

It is against their religion. You can take photos of the horses or the food, but not of them.
