The Eclipse is Coming ("like totally") on August 21st! (Part One)

For the first time since 1979, there will be a total eclipse of the sun visible in the whole United States, except for Alaska and Hawaii. My state of Oregon in the direct path of the eclipse and we expect to have over a million visitors tot eh state over that weekend. We will be able to see it well (but carefully) from our home. But in central Oregon, the sunny, clear skies are almost guaranteed in August and that is where the most visitors are expected. Campgrounds all over the state have been booked solid for months, as have hotels. What rooms that are left are going at exorbitant prices. Madras, Oregon, population 6000, will have over two minutes of total darkness and is the center of interest for tourists, along with little towns like Spray (pop. 160, one gas station, one convenience store) may have 10,000 visitors. More to come soon about the eclipse and small towns.

Hotels with rooms left in Bend, Oregon are asking $1400 a night. There are no campsites left in parks.

When the eclipse happened in 1979, I stood in the middle of an empty lot in east Multnomah county and soaked up the experience. There was no one there with me. Do you know what time the eclipse can be observed in Eugene and here?

"For the first time since 1979, there will be a total eclipse of the sun visible in the whole United States, except for Alaska and Hawaii." To be clear, the total phase of the eclipse will only be visible in parts of 14 states. The rest of the country (including Hawaii and Alaska) will get a partial eclipse. As the date of the August 21 eclipse draws near, keep this important safety information in mind: You MUST use special eclipse safety glasses to view a partial eclipse and the partial phases of a total eclipse. To do otherwise is risking permanent eye damage and even blindness. The ONLY time it's safe to look at a TOTAL eclipse without proper eye protection is during the very brief period of totality when the Sun is 100 percent blocked by the Moon. If you're in a location where the eclipse won't be total, there is NEVER a time when it's safe to look with unprotected eyes. NEVER attempt to view an eclipse with an optical device (camera, binoculars, telescope) that doesn't have a specially designed solar filter that fits snugly on the front end (the Sun side) of the device. Additionally, never attempt to view an eclipse with an optical device while wearing eclipse glasses; the focused light will destroy the glasses and enter and damage your eyes.

To be even clearer, the eclipse, according to NASA, people all over the continental US will see at least a partial eclipse. I think that you are referring to the "area of totality." Good info about the eye problem potential, but it hard to believe that anyone does not know about it. Warnings are always good.

@NationalEclipsecom But very impressive to those who have not seen one at all, so It will be a thrill for many.

The path of totality is a roughly 70-mile wide path from Oregon to South Carolina. That's the only place where one can see the full effects of the total eclipse. Everyone else in the U.S. will see a partial eclipse, which is significantly less impressive. Regarding eye safety, you would be surprised how many people *don't* understand the dangers, or who have been given misinformation about proper procedures. So, yes, valid warnings are always good.

It came. It went. It was cloudy here in the East Bay of the Bay Area for the first time in about three months. God works in mysterious ways.

Yes, She really does. The crowds were big but not what was expected. Maybe the fires put people off. I hope that little town of Spray can pay for all the porta-potties it rented.

We are right in the path of this. It's going to be a nightmare with traffic, getting gas and stores. We'll stock up before and stay put.

@JamesHxstatic I'm in Scio but not in the little town but very rural up a mountain in the pines. It's between Albany and Lyons and not far from Stayton. I'm 26 miles from Salem. Our little ranch road is about two miles or so long and ends at the Jordan river and people sneak down there in the summer. I'm expecting some to try to camp there. The people down at that end are very protective so hopefully no one gets shot.
