Another Girl Fight, 2 Suspensions, 20 Days Combined

A vicious fight broke out in the girl's locker room at the start of PE today. The Coaches thought it was turning into a riot and sent out a call for help. As it turned out, only 2 girls were involved. All the other boys and girls were just trying to crowd into the locker room to see the fight. Apparently one of the girls had been spreading nasty rumors about the other girl. The other girl had at least 4 inches and 40 pounds on the trash talker. She wound up bashing the trash talker's head into the concrete block wall. This whole situation reinforces two things in my mind. These children are feral, and it's time for me to leave public education. Would you stay in a job where you felt you might be in danger every day and you had no practical way to protect of defend yourself?

It's sad that a dedicated teacher feels he has to move on but you have to if you wish to retain your sanity.

@DWDavis That is sad that those parents can't afford to pull their kids out and send them to a private school. But, I have heard of an online High School. It costs something, but I am thinking it may cost less than private schools. I hope those parents will look into it.

My wife is insistent that I not return to public education next year. It is sad. Some of the kids are great kids, but they are the brave few whose parents would pull them out if they could afford to.

@LeaPea2417 One thing school vouchers may do is allow working parents to afford private school while leaving the public schools to the welfare class. I know several private schools already plan to raise their tuition if vouchers become widely available so that no one will be able to afford to attend with the vouchers alone.

I would never stay at a job where I didn't feel safe. Maybe its time for you to pursue other opportunities?

I have already found a position outside public education. If I can make it through 18 more school days.

@DWDavis Well if a concussion is the worst of it, that's not too bad!

She has quite a bump and her mom was taking her to the ER to be evaluated for concussion. We hadn't heard anything by the time I left school.

@DWDavis If she has a concussion, I would make the girl who hit her's parents pay the hospital bill.

Wow, it is awful how these kids are today. They are being raised with no morals and in broken homes. With all the violence in the movies etc, it contributes to this. I would not stay in a job where I felt my life was in danger on a daily basis. You are doing the right thing by getting out of public education. What new job/career path are you seeking?

They are growing up feral, with no effective adult in their lives, and only the bad examples of their subculture, music, and media to shape their lives after.

If I were you D W, if you are not happy with working at a public school due to health concerns, I would find another line of work. As much as I like to deliver food, those days are done due to my older age and happiness finding another line of work.

I have taken a position with a small private school in the area. In less than a month I will put public school behind me.

@DWDavis Public schools today are really looking like combat zones compared to when I went to high school in the late 1970s when fights were few.

I have been put in danger a couple of times doing my job but it's a very different scenario from yours. I've only defended myself once but if anything had came of it my company would've backed me up. I'm guessing in public education you'd end up risking losing your job by raising so much as a finger in self defence. I reckon education needs a major overhaul when it comes to discipline. I know a few teachers who are desperate to leave the profession.

I've been in dangerous situations, both as a soldier and in other jobs, but in all those cases the threat was other adults and I was in a position to defend myself. I know a lot of teachers who are just counting down the days until they can retire or who are looking for work outside education. The number of people leaving is outpacing the number of new teachers enough that the schools will be in a greater crisis in a few short years.

@Essjayd Between the relatively low pay, the growing public antipathy towards teachers, and the lack of support from admin and politicians, it's amazing anyone even wants to teach in public schools anymore.

@DWDavis It's a shame that so many are trying to leave. I can't say I blame them when I hear of some of the stuff that happens.

Dreadfully stressful for you to put up with all that. Today I have seen yet another similar to that over here on the News. I know the Teachers are very fed up indeed also.

If something doesn't change soon, the teacher shortage will continue to grow. When students tell me they want to be teachers when they grow up, I try to subtly convince them otherwise. When friends tell me they are thinking of becoming teachers, I tell them they are out of their minds.

I would also have to leave, there is no way I would be afraid to go to work every day. I would be miserable.

It's not so much being afraid as being discouraged that our school has deteriorated to the point it has with no hope it will ever get better, only worse. Just today, two students wound up suspended for threatening teachers.

I remember the previous fight and I remember you already thought to leave public education. Now I would say that if you fear for your own safety, it's time to go.

I hope you understand, but I don't find any comfort in knowing the behavior of our students equates well with that of prison inmates.

Hell, I wouldn't even be a school bus driver either @DWDavis . These kids have gotten so out of hand it's ridiculous. And talk about parenting? There is no such thing.

Among a lot of our students, there is only one adult breeder in the house. I refuse to call those women parents. They want to have babies by certain sperm donors - I won't call them fathers - but they don't want to raise children.

Better it is brought under control. Somebody should interfere and calm them down. But, if it is a regular feature in the job better to be away

At one time there were enough students whom I felt I could reach, for whom I was making a difference. I don't feel that way anymore.

I feel like these kids just need to be watched better and better disciplined. Fights happen, especially with teenagers. It is kind of predictable. I had many teachers that worked at schools that was nothing but filled with violence and craziness but made it out alive and went to work at different places.

Please write you Congressman and state legislator to insist they fund schools adequately to allow for enough staff to watch these kids every second they are on campus, because that's what it would take. Also, mention in the letter that they need to restore the type of consequences that will make students think twice about breaking the rules. As it is, far too many students seek the consequences because they prefer them to being in class.

The documentation shows we've had more problems with violent girls than boys each of the last several years. They are products of their culture, a culture that teaches them every real or perceived insult must be answered with violence. This is what happens when you have multiple generations of unmarried teenage girls having daughters who then become unmarried teenage girls having daughters.
