New to Netflix is the story of Anne of Green Gables. New cast members, old story and just as familiar, a few changes, but for the most part it sticks to the familiar story line. The girl who plays Anne is delightful. So are the actors who play the Cuthberts. Even Rachel Linde is perfect for the part, even if she doesn't look the part.
I've seen the first two episodes so far. It's just one season, but I hope there will be more.
Credits roll by pretty fast so it was hard to see who's who. If you're familiar with Anne of Green Gables and enjoyed the original, I hope you will give this one a try. It really is delightful.
Thanks for reading.

My relatives plan to cut the cable soon. I could use some new fresh stories for my entertainment.

The reviews of this production from Netflix have been generally harsh. The main complaint is that people think that they've made it too dark and grim. I have the luck to have never read Anne of Green Gables, nor to have seen any previous production. But, I must say, if the book and previous productions were fluffier than this one, I doubt I would have had any interest in them. The bleak reality of Anne's life as an orphan is well portrayed in this Netflix version, and I think deserves to be portrayed. Dickens never failed to give us the disturbing details of the sad lives of those in poverty. I think it rounds things out and makes it more believable, less like Orphan Annie. Oh, which one plagiarized?

@just4him I don't know that either was plagiarized, it just seems very coincidental that we have two red-headed orphans named Anne/Annie in two different forms of literature. Of course, Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908. Little Orphan Annie comic strip didn't appear until 1924. However, they were both preceded by a poem written in 1885 called "Little Orphant Annie" and it is said that the subject of this poem was the inspiration for the Raggedy Ann doll. Seems that all inspiration is less like a bolt of lightning and more like static electricity, passing itself on through unconscious contact.

I saw it was added to netflix, I wasn't sure it was something I would like, although I love period pieces. So now that you say it's pretty good I will have to give it a go.

@fishtiger58 Yes it could. They are similar but different, and both are charming.

@just4him I haven't seen the original so I can't compare and that may be good.

I always have an open mind with re-makes. Colleen Dewhurst played the original Murilla and the woman who plays her in this re-make reminds me very much of her. They all have the qualities necessary for this re-make and the person portraying Anne is just delightful, as was the original.

We watched it on CBC before it hit Netflix. It's a fantastic season, but it ends all too soon! It has been renewed for a second season, though.
You will find that there are more differences as the season goes on. The story takes on a lot more depth than in the Kevin Sullivan adaptations we all know and love. I agree that Rachel Lynde is well played, as are Anne and Matthew and Marilla.
Geraldine James (Mrs Hudson from the 2009 version of Sherlock Holmes[/]) plays Marilla. R. H. Thomson (you might know him from [i]Road to Avonlea or from An American Christmas Carol) plays Matthew. The young lady who plays Anne is an Irish-Canadian actress I'd never seen before. Her name is Amybeth McNulty.

I'm glad it's been renewed for a second season. It came to an end all too soon. I do like the depth it has gone to to make the story that much better. Amybeth McNulty has a future as an actress. She's very good.
