Washing Machine Problems

Our washing machine is a twin-tub, top-loader with the wash tub on the left and the spin-dryer on the right. Our current unit is probably 8 to 10 years old. A few years ago, we had a problem with the spin-dryer - we found a sock was blocking the drain. Last year, we would find the plastic safety cover of the spin-dryer on the floor, several feet away. One time I was there when it happened. The top cover of the spin-dryer flew open during the spin cycle and the plastic safety cover shot to the right. Good thing I was standing on the left side in front of the wash tub. It would have been like getting hit with a Frisbee. We realized it's been flying out during the spin cycle because the plastic safety cover is no longer flat. The edges are curled/curved from years of pulling it out after each spin cycle, so the diameter became smaller than the rim of the spin basket. I think it was also last year when I search and ordered a new top cover for the spin-dryer. That's why it is blue while the cover of the wash tub is gray. This week, we finally had the top cover of the spin-dryer fixed. The spring was rusty and broke, so we had been using a stick to hold it up while we take out the clothes after each spin cycle. While it was being fixed, my mother mentioned that she hears something from under the wash tub during the wash cycle, which surprised me since the rest of us never noticed any. So the repairman dismantled the rotating disc at the bottom of the wash tub - and there was a big knotted clump of lint and multi-colored threads underneath! He said with other washing machines he serviced, he would find coins or underwear there. Overall, except for the flying Frisbee, I think these are minor problems and they started only in recent years. Just normal wear and tear as the machine got older, I guess. What problems have you had with your washing machine or dryer?

It's good these problems were identified and fixed. Some older machines last so much longer than newer models.

the only washing machine we had that didn't last long was the single-tub automatic. all the twin-tub, top-loaders lasted years considering the number of people using them.

@cacay1 Some last a long time but the newer ones don't seem so strongly built.

@hereandthere appliances have what we call end of life where it becomes less expensive to buy a new one than to have it fixed or to buy parts. 8 to 10 years is long service of course depending on use.

@louievill unlike before when appliances lasted much longer. it's like one by one, the parts are acting up. just like what happened with our ancient cpu.

I had to replace my washing machine a few months ago as the whole basket sheered off and broke. It made a huge clanging noise and I knew immediately something was wrong. So, it couldn't be repaired which wasn't an expense I was ready for. Glad that you didn't get hit by that flying safety cover and it all could be repaired rather than replaced.

it was really a mystery at first, that "flying frisbee." then i noticed when my nephew did his laundry, he would flip it and it wouldn't fly out. of course, i still bought a new safety cover for our own safety. i would be scared of clanging noises too(like what if it exploded?) and get a sinking feeling at the same time, knowing there would be a major expense. what caused the basket to shear off?

@hereandthere the repairman didn't give me an explanation of why the basket sheered off but just said something like the bolts had broken and it was more costly to fix it than replace the whole machine. I still don't think something like that should happen and that it's a manufacturers defect of some sort but i didn't pursue it and just bought a new one

That is a dangerous thing to happen.

When our last washing machine broke, the repair would have been ridiculous, so we bought a new one and matching dryer. Both tops lock automatically until the clothes are done. We've had them for 12 years now, so our days are numbered.........

one time we did have a single-tub automatic, but the tub was too small (and there were many of us here back then). and then the "dashboard" became messed up not long after. i hope this one lasts a few more years.

We don't have an issue as of the moment because we make sure after using it we check it.

i'm glad my mother mentioned the sounds she hears (which we didn't) because that was not really the reason i contacted the repairman. because of her, the area under the wash tub was checked and cleaned.

The flying frisbee sounds scary, but glad that nobody got hurt. It can be really interesting for the service guy to find different things inside the washing machine. Was it expensive to get your washing machine fixed? We just bought a new washing machine last year, after using the old one for about 10 years. It started to stop half way washing, then we opened the lid and closed it back, it would continue. After some time, we found our white shirt turned yellowish. After that, the machine just stopped washing.... I couldn't remember what the last issue we had with the old washing machine, but we decided to buy a new one instead of repairing it, as I heard that the repair can be very costly because something might need to be changed.

as louievill said below, modern appliances seem to have shorter life spans as they release newer models. it also gets harder to have it repaired because the parts might not be available so you're better off buying a new one. if you go through the authorized service centers, it's expensive. small repair shops are cheaper.

We inherited our washer/dryer from the previous owners of this house. It was still a newer model, but the thing is she apparently had many animals living here (which we didn't know til after we bought the house). But with a good cleaning the washer/dryer has been ok. The thing is I messed it up while washing a big thick picnic blanket - I smelled burnt rubber. It still runs, but I'm sure something will give eventually. Towards the end of the cycle, it sounds like a train!

the smell of burning rubber and loud as a train is worrisome. have you tried looking up possible causes online?

we are not using our washing machine now because our laundrywoman came home and she wash our clothes every Tuesday. we had a twin tub washing machine but it was burned when my son was in his 2nd high school year. the brand National was durable and reliable as well.

None as of now..We had to change the outlet pipe

i guess the outlet pipe means the hose at the back through which the water drains out? we moved the washing machine to this new area a month or two ago, and we learned from the repairman that he can buy us a longer hose so we said yes because it will help a lot.

Oh that is good that your machine is fixed. we had a washing machine earlier which had a small part on its corner where the dust and Threads etc used to accumulate so that we can throw them later by taking out that little part and cleaning it..

our machine does have a lint filter/trap, but for some reason, this model is sideways (like a flag) and the net never fills up, even if it's not torn. all our previous units, the lint filter/trap is horizontal so you empty it once it's full.

This problem could have caused a serious problem. My washing machine and dryer are two separate units. I bought the two when we bought the house 18 years ago and I never had a problem.
