Did you say, "Where's the Beef?"

I am sure many of you remember that commercial with the old lady asking, "Where's the beef?" Quite annoying wasn't she!!
Well, today we found the beef at a place called Brasstown Beef Farm Store at Ridgefield Farms in Brasstown, North Carolina. I had seen a segment on TV about them and their farm raised beef store. We obviously are beef fans, so it was a place for us to shop.
The 'store' is basically a very small room where the girl takes your order and then goes into the freezer and comes back out with the product. Most of their meats are frozen and all are vacuum sealed and labeled. We got two London broils, three NY strip steaks and a delmonico (which she said is very similar to rib eye).
We did see a good majority of their bulls just lounging around and waiting to be called into service LOL! We didn't see many cows but we sure could smell them. I have not smelled that much manure since - since never I guess!
Once we left it took a few miles down the road before the smell left my nose - gone but not forgotten for sure.
We came, we saw, we did what was on our list and we will go home tomorrow stuff in more ways than one!

They had just opened we were the only ones there The prices are higher than the grocery store, but most grocery store beef around here is not high quality and we throw out more than we eat since it's so tough.

@josie_ We just bought it this morning - we will not be eating any of it here. We might have one tomorrow for dinner when we get home.

@AbbyGreenhill _As the saying goes, "The proof of the pudding (beef in this case) is in the eating. So how was your steak? I hope you didn't have any beef with your beef.

I agree - it's like working in a bakery - you get used to it, but at least a bakery is a pleasant smell LOL!

If I were to choose a steak I think it would be the rib eye. Very tasty. Be safe on the way home.

@AbbyGreenhill ......I like meat with some fat. The trick is to cook it so that the fat is crispied and so tasty. THen you cut a bit of it with each bite. I like it that way.

We hope it will be. We bought steak at a local place that butcheries one cow every six months. We paid way more for that than we did today and the beef was tough as nails.

How are you keeping the meat cold until you make it back to your home?

@AbbyGreenhill I never like to risk letting meat thaw.. I thought you might be close enough to home though. How much longer are you staying in NC?

We have a cooler, we're only two hours from home. they would probably stay frozen w/o a cooler.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Just until the morning. It won't thaw in two hours in a cooler. We have brought home frozen shrimp from SC to TN - an hour ride - and it was fine in the cooler.

The bulls were waiting for the ladies!!!! I don't think they do their own slaughtering there, no I looked they don't. It's quite an interesting story if you want to read it.

Yes, I remember the commercial. It doesn't take much for my memory to conjure up that manure smell from cows. I used to live on a farm as a child and all the neighbors around us had cows. We didn't. My father was not a farmer, only rented the farm. It was a good couple years of my life.

We lived in New Jersey when I was a kid and the college farm (Rutgers Ag school's farm) was close and we were there visiting the cows frequently and the smell was the same then and now!

@AbbyGreenhill That's one smell that doesn't change. My father always said it was good clean air. Cleared the nasal passages quite well.
