Finally making some progress towards understanding my throat problem

For at least 6 weeks my voice has been extremely hoarse, making it quite difficult for me to make myself understood. I find myself very conscious about attempting to speak to anyone, although some level of speech is necessary. Today I had my appointment at the hospital in respect of my throat issue. Not a pleasant experience, but no doubt a necessary one. The consultant sprayed some anaesthetic up my nostrils and proceeded to place a tube with a camera up my nostril and down into my throat. He even had the audacity to tell me to relax, which I was incapable of. Of course this did serve the purpose of allowing him to view the problem much more closely. For some unknown reason it seems that my right vocal chords are not working, leaving me totally dependant on my left vocal chords. To be honest, I had no idea that we had left and right vocal chords. Now I will be awaiting another appointment for a CT scan. I was already awaiting notification for an X-ray, so I still have plenty of time to spend at the hospital.

Oh dear. This is something I had to look up and it says acute laryngitis. But in other things it says caused by surgery, but they are not saying any of these things. And now another appointment. I am so sorry to hear this and that must have been simply awful today. Relax indeed!

I seem to be spending more time at the hospital than some of the staff. That was my fourth visit in one week and I now have 2 appointments scheduled.

@TiarasOceanView Very true. For many years I rarely saw a doctor, but recently it encompasses most of my time.

@Asylum Well I hate to say this not minimizing your pain or suffering, but I am glad you are not over here as it costs a flipping fortune if you get sick..that is one good thing about England.

I did not know either that we have right and left vocal chords and I wonder which is the reason why your left are not working. I hope that now, knowing the reason, they can find a remedy.

The scan should throw up some clues, but I cannot see how they can be reactivated.

@Asylum I think there are a few possibilities to reactivate the vocal chords. I suspect that you would not accept surgery.

The question is, how do you reactivate a vocal chord that is not responding?

@Asylum ......I don't know. If there is something surgery can do perhaps that.

So sorry you are having such problems. This is a first for me too. Never heard of anything like this. I will put in a prayer for you and hope it all works out alright. Perhaps this can make you understand it more before some other doctor does something to you.

@Asylum I'm sorry but I didn't want you to get scared at the hospital besides it could be totally different for you. My prayers and blessing with you.

Good grief they are certainly giving you the works. Have you had blood tests too?

Yes I had. My doctor referred me for the low sodium in my blood and then for the bad throat, creating concurrent appointments. After the issue of being picked up by an ambulance the other day I have ended up with 3 concurrent series of appointments.

@garymarsh6 A few years ago I spent 4 days in hospital and they arranged an MRI for 2 days after my discharge.

@Asylum It is ironic that all tests can't be done in one go when you are in hospital. It is annoying and frustrating for us too and so inconvenient for the patient. We should be using scanners 24/7. If you were that ill and needed a test most would not mind going at midnight just to get it done quickly!

Now that they have nailed down the problem, I hope a fix, very soon is in the future. I had no idea that there were left and right vocal chords either. The things we learn in our old age! I hope you don't have to wait long for your scan and X-ray.

@Asylum Good, it sounds like it will be dealt with soon then. I hate having that tube down my throat, they did it years ago for some reason and I was not a happy camper.

If you were a singer, it would be the end of your career or the beginning of a new one. They will get a 3D view with a CT scan that might help them to understand. Take care of yourself.

My hopes of becoming an operatic tenor are becoming slim. Of course they were very slim to start with.

@Asylum Who knows ? Now you can become an interesting medical case for a surgeon who will make a point of honor to give you the vocal chords of a tenor. Work your solfeggio.

Imagine having hoarse voice for 6 weeks. I would also be very worried and would have gone to the doctor after a week if my voice is still hoarse after a week. Actually, I experienced having a hoarse and sore throat when I got sick last May 14. I went to the doctor on the fourth day I had it. Good thing, after a few days it was back already. I hope your voice will soon be back.

This seems unlikely since some of the vocal chords are not working.

@Asylum ouch - doubt if I'd relax with a camera line going through my nose either. Didn't know our vocal chords were so complex - hope yours can become fully operational again soon

Okay, I needed to get back to find out exactly what is going on with you and I am now more confused about why they are looking at your lungs if the vocal cords are the issue.

So hang fire on the title deeds to that post-mortem des-res plot in Cotgrave then. Sounds a bit of a one-sided diagnosis...
