Pickling season has begun!

Cucumbers and some other goodies are ready or canning or pickling here.
Anything we do not have enough of when it comes to items to pickle, someone else in the area will have.
We just did tons of cucumbers with onions, carrots, and peppers and more. Not everyone is a fan of pickled foods, but here they are a favorite.
Our favorite recipe is from one of our grandmothers and is considered "Bread and Butter" pickles by some, while others would just say sweet pickles.
Some of our grandmother's tricks when it comes to pickling are still a secret (although we can't see why we can't just share) but most in the family are quickly learning what to use.
Is it time to can or pickle fresh veggies where you are?

Gooseberries: We take these in powdered form but have never seen whole ones here @Nawsheen

@PatZAnthony That's good for you. We have no garden or something like that and therefore we always have to go to the market to buy the vegetables.

There are so many cucumbers and zucchini each year, if we did not pickle, these would go to waste.
Everyone shares but there are still too many!

@youless Here many go to the Farmer's Market in our area to get fresh things grown locally. This is a nice option we have if we don't have a garden and appreciate those who grow what we don't.

I haven't done any canning yet, however, must get started soon. My large freezer is full now. I'm not sure what I'll start with this year. My husband mentioned carrots and my daughter wants pickles.

Those in this area with greenhouses were ready so early @marlina
It is great to know people who have whatever we don't.

@marlina For me, pickling is easy enough, but canning some things takes more effort.

My stomach won't allow me to eat pickled foods and my husband loves Jewish dill pickles but not pickles done in vinegar. We sold our canning jars and other equipment, I don' like canned food, I like crisp veggies. I saw your photo on FB. If you have a recipe for pickles not in vinegar let me know.

Bill Averbach on Facebook (Pickleville) has the recipe for pickles w/o vinegar. Many here make those too!
We can b/c there is too much to eat all of it. The canned (and frozen) items will fill the winter pantry.

probably so but haven't had anything like that for 38 yrs. used to do it myself some out in the country back then in Ohio. my grandma did canning and pickling big time when i was little and i remember how good everything was. i can see how a person could live without meat if they had that all the time.

For us, meat is not even a consideration. We get all we want from the green things growing here and the beautiful tomatoes, etc. Tons of items to can here if someone wants to do it @bunnybon7

@1hopefulman It is a clever idea to have a balcony garden. Every little bit gives us an appreciation for the plants that feed us!

Here many start their seeds inside @1hopefulman
The really dedicated growers have small greenhouses and freeze or can everything they can so they don't have to purchase what they want.

Try making a small batch of something that you will keep in the refrigerator first. We like to make fresh preserves, but do small batches that are just kept cold until ready to use @Debscrochet

@jobelbojel It is very simple. You only need vinegar, spices and sometimes sugar or salt. Check out youtube!

It is popular here to preserve food "just in case" here @jobelbojel
Also, it assures us we will have certain things available when the season is gone and winter stops us from growing many things.

I love bread and butter pickles. I used to make them every year but quit because I was the only one eating them. My husband and boys are stick in the muds. The only pickles they'll eat are traditional dill pickles. I would love to get a jar of string bean pickles. My grandma made the best... Have fun pickling.

We 'put up' tomatoes and such too when we can. Love doing jams when the berries are right.

Anything pickled probably has a similar taste @Kattu_007
For most here, it is a matter of preserving what we might otherwise have to throw away.
