Today Didn't Happen Like I Expected

Today at about 11 a.m. I went up to the office to see if I could talk to my Principal and submit my resignation. All the paperwork I needed to do was done. My room was cleaned out and ready for summer. I had nothing left to do. When I got there, I looked out the front door and saw her driving off. I asked where she was going, and the receptionist told me the Principal was taking her daughter to a dental appointment. I asked what time she'd be back and was told she was taking the rest of the day off. It looks like I'll have to wait until Monday to formally resign since my missus and I are leaving tomorrow for a four-day, three-night camping trip. Monday will still be plenty of time. Have you ever tried to leave a job and had to wait because the person you needed to give your resignation to left work early that day?

Poor you! No. I never resigned, but found everyone of importance in the principal's office the day I told her I was retiring. Sure made it easier.

I was all set to face the music. Now I'll have to work up the nerve again.

@DianneN I've played it close to the vest because my new school couldn't announce the vacancy, much less the filling thereof, until June 1.

I have to go in Monday to pick up my county semi-annual supplement check anyway. Maybe it will be easier with fewer people around. I am really looking forward to this camping trip.

So you have to resign via the principal? I'd thought those kinds of things were handled at the offices of the school board.

Do you suppose she is trying to prevent you from resigning @DWDavis ?

@rebelann I don't think so. Perhaps if she knew I was planning on leaving she might have tried, but I don't think she had any idea about it.

Here in NC, the Principal is the one who hires you, subject to approval of the School Board, which is usually a rubber stamp issue, and the Principal is the one you inform that you are resigning. Also, she and I have had an excellent working relationship for over 12 years. I would have let her know before going to the Central Office anyway.

No, but at this point it must be a formality for you.

Just out of interest, would your new school not have contacted your current school for a reference? Enjoy your camping trip!

Not in this case. My new Principal and I have been friends for over twenty years and she has kept a standing offer for me to come to work for her whenever I felt ready.

Oh that's kind of a bummer. Have you formally accepted the job at the new school? Or does that have to wait until you are officially done at the public school? Either way, Happy Summer and have a great trip camping! Are you taking the dogs?

I have formally accepted the new job. My resignation from the public school is a done deal, as long as I give 30 days notice, so I technically have until July 1 to make my intentions known. We are taking the dogs camping with us. We never go without them. Ace would have a fit.

There are days that don't go as planned and sorry to hear you weren't able to turn in the paperwork. Enjoy the camping trip and Monday you will be able to move on to a new job. I'm glad you already have a new position.

I don't think so. I suppose if you were really anxious too, you could leave it on her desk.

I considered that, however, I feel like this is something I need to do in person.

I never have this happen to me. If I were you I would be a little anxious because it would feel like prolonging my agony - you know just wanting to get something done and over it. But you're right, there's still Monday. For now, enjoy the good weather and your time with the family.

I think I'm past the anxiety stage now, knowing I've already signed the contract for the other job. My missus and I are looking forward to camping.

No, I've honestly either given two weeks or just quit. Or been laid off.

I'll bet that was frustrating. I didn't have that problem. When I decided to retire in June, I told my principal in November. I did that because its hard to find a good physics teacher. There were days when I regretted. She did everything short of begging to try and talk me out of retiring.

That sounds like a bit of a let down. Enjoy your camping trip. We had to let them know in May if we were resigning!
