How is your sense of direction? Maybe you have DTD?

Mine is not very good and has never been. As a kid, I went with two other boys out to a west Texas pasture a couple of miles from the little town where my dad lived. One of them said, "Which way is town James?" I pointed to the opposite direction immediately. On a trip to Las Vegas once, I made a stop, then proceeded back in the opposite direction for maybe fifty miles. (In defense, that desert country looks identical for miles). My wife and I joke about this a lot. She has a pretty unerring sense. Finally, in a Dr. Roach column in this morning's paper, I see that there is a "recently described" condition called "developmental topographic disorientation." My problem is minor compared to many. There is even a Canadian website called www.gettinglost.com (love that name). As conditions go mine is fairly minor I guess, since I have always found my way home. I will be checking out the site.

I would never know which is the way if it weren´t for the Andes mountains. They are just there, showing me the way

@JamesHxstatic It surely is! Children are taught at school to place one of their arms pointing the Andes and then they can learn north and south, east and west.

I used to have a great sense of direction. Not so much anymore since I'm not outside much and hardly ever see the sun when I'm out in the Pacific Northwest.

I get lost easily and turned completely around, but as you say I've always found my way home so I suppose I'm not too bad off.

@JamesHxstatic If we get lost and can't find the way home we'll know we have problems.

Never heard of this before! My husband says I have a poor sense of direction, but I think mine is ok--what I can't keep track of is which way is north, south etc--but the island I live on is a bit skewed in terms of direction--

My sense of direction is excellent, my husband very poor but he insists in not listening to me when I tell him he is taking the wrong direction.

I need an immediate lifetime membership. There's a larger town where we go shopping and I can get around pretty well unless I accidently find myself in the downtown business section. It's like being in the Bermuda Triangle. GPS doesn't always help me either. The voice told me one time to "go south." If I knew where south was, I wouldn't need the GPS.

Right, that go south thing is no help at all.

I'm usually pretty good. I did get lost in Seattle once. I went over with friends and stayed at a friend of one of my friend's house. I headed off in the morning and had no trouble finding the place I was going. But when I started home the onramp to the freeway where I needed to go was closed. I followed the detour signs but I knew I ended up on the wrong freeway going the wrong direction. I ended up driving all over the place trying to get on the right freeway. I eventually did and once I did, it was easy to get back to the house where I was staying even after dark. I don't think I would have had any problems if the onramp was not closed.

You sound as if you do pretty well. I would feel better if they would stop moving the lake.

Here, we have the mountains to the west to make it an easy reference point.

I certainly relate, though I have driven all over the western US with not too many problems.

I used to get lost all the time when driving somewhere for the first time. Then I started going in the opposite direction to what I thought was correct (and many times it worked out) So yeah, I'm directionally challenged! Finally, got a GPS. It's very stressful getting lost

I'm not good at directions at all. Thank God my husband is very good with it. I definitely get it from my mom, she's the same way.

We like to use our GPS, but even that can get us lost @JamesHxstatic Many might have DTD and not know it!
