People's Phobias

Years ago, when I worked for dollar general, I had this woman come in and buy a few figurine type things.
I wanted to bag them all up nicely in the bags we had, but she wouldn't allow it?
REASON: they were yellow.
I thought it was an oddly ridiculous phobia but I try not to judge. I might have judged more harshly back then at the time.
A few days later? She came in to return the broken figurines.
Then more recently, but still several years ago I was working up front (before I got moved to stock crew) at the place I work now. A lady told me she didn't have a VIC card (our store's loyalty program card.. well I guess several of you now know what company I work for) and that she wouldn't ever get one.
"Best way for them to spy on you it is." Atleast according to her. While I can't disagree with her I certainly can't agree. They do track your shopping and give you coupons relevant to your shopping at the registers. They also customize your online (emailed to you) circular.
This isn't meant to put either of these two ladies down.
We all have our phobias, and I am definitely not any better than anyone else.
I still wash my hands right after touching the mail (anthrax scare) though I imagine that's more a good habit than a phobia.
I can't think of any phobias I have at the moment, but if I do I'll edit this or mention it below...

It's not a bad habit, washing our hands. Just think, our ancestors didn't exactly have the same inclination, or knowledge that it was a good idea to keep germs away.

@LadyDuck I only have that thought in public bathrooms or whilst using shopping carts. Otherwise I don't seem to think of it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I wash my hands all the time, but every time I touch something I cannot stop thinking how many people has touched before I do.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I agree. I can't even stand to see them on TV.

@Shavkat I tend to have bad dreams about them if I have seen them! T.v. or otherwise.
If i smell watermelon outside with no conceivable reasoning for it (neighbors aren't eating it) I go right back inside!

Snakes are the worst! I don't care how small they are, they still creep me out!

My mom always laughed at me and said "for a person who likes to grow plants you sure wash your hands a lot."

Cleanliness is next to godliness.
It's all a matter of texture. Some people just can't stand the feel of dirt, mud and debris on their skin for too long. Plus it's such a bother under the fingernails.

One of my friends has a real thing about the hotel room cards, that they have all your personal information on them, I think she may be right but I don't worry about it.

The room key cards?
You know I've never thought about that.

I never knew that they had all that info on them.
Even so, wouldn't they be wiped / blanked off after check out?

@ScribbledAdNauseum yup all your credit card info is on them and we just throw them around. These days I take them with me when I leave.

I still have the motor cycle phobia. And I hope my sister save me by accompanying my dad to renew his registration next month.

I think a lot of hate those types insects.
I once saw a centipede crawling on my bed. I had just washed the bedding the day before but had to kill it by getting a papertowel and squashing it so off I went to clean the bedding once more.

The lady who bought the figurine reminds me of very superstitious people who believe in fortune telling and rely on that actually. Everything they do is based on the stars and they won't go out of the house without checking their horoscope for the day.

Hmm. She told me she didn't like the color yellow, and it seemed to be a phobia for her.
Though there are plenty of people like you've described.

I just have the usual ... heights {but not heights ... not sure how to explain it}, big fat spiders, talking on the phone, walking into a room full of people, talking to people ... just people, generally. :)

Texting is my preferred method of communication.
I can talk to people, but prefer not to!
Heights but not heights?

No phobias here. I did see a woman at the grocery store repeatedly ask the cashier to turn the conveyor belt off. She said she saw someone get their finger stuck in it once. The cashier turned it back on a couple of times purely out of habit and she kept freaking out and asking for it to be shut off. I always think of her when I'm at the store bagging up my groceries.

Yikes! I can't say I blame the woman for that phobia. I definitely wouldn't want to see someone get theirs stuck in!
Food Lion's down here don't have a conveyor belt or any kind of turnstile.
The store I work for has a turnstile and a switch for the cashier and for the bagger to use.

The shopper's loyalty card issue isn't difficult to get around... don't list your actual name. You can actually fill out the form with "Safeway Shopper" as your name.

Yes but you still give address, phone number and email address now.

@spiderdust I guess I hadn't thought of giving a false snail mail address.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You can create an email address that you use only for services that you think will give you spam and use that one for the form. You can also give the address of your local cemetery.

Some people have crazy phobias. I know the show Maury has done some episodes on people with weird phobias like gum, cotton swabs, plastic bags, etc. but people think I am crazy/weird for my Thalassophobia which is the fear of open waters and my fear of sharks. I mean being afraid of the color yellow is crazy since so many things in life are yellow.

The sun, for instance.
I don't blame you for being afraid of open waters or sharks, those are both scary concepts.
I haven't watched the maury show in soo long.
I have a fear of elevators as well as a fear of being locked in stairwells. I can't win for losing.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Those are valid phobias though and are actual things that can kill us or cause us to seriously hurt ourselves, but come on cotton isn't going to kill anyone unless you are doing something weird like eating it.

Okay I have a germophobia.
