Walking with Mohair Sam

Despite the sad news of Bob's (Anne's brother in law) death in Idaho, I am here in Oregon trying to stick to my routine of walking tow to three miles each morning. Tomorrow will be the 14th day and I will be out there. I don't take a radio or listen to music, preferring to hear the sounds of birds and the breeze instead (not the traffic on one part of my route though). My mind turns on the music anyway and lately it has been that huge hit from 1965 called "Mohair Sam." The cadence is great for walking. The thing that really surprised me was that the song was a Charlie Rich hit. If i ever knew that, it was long forgotten. I associate him with that droning "Behind Closed Doors," but he had a long string of crossover hits. The song was written by Dallas Frazier, who also penned "Elvira," "Tell it like it Is" and more. So, it's usually "Mohair Sam" or that old Army cadence song/chant, called "Sound Off," which curiosity led me to find originated in 1944 when an African-American soldier training troops at Fort Slocum, NY started it to buck of the spirits of soldiers marching back from a weary day of training. It was used when I was in the Army and, no doubt, still is. I don't know 'Mohair Sam' but I've heard Sound Off many a time. Glad you've been able to stick to your walking routine.

@JudyEv They are beautiful. The Chihuahua's name is embarrassingly simple, but she could not think of a better one, it is Hua-Hua or sometimes Chee.

I was in Portland the last two days with my daughter. We did a major walk on Monday.

@JamesHxstatic How's the little dog? I've forgotten her name. There is a Pyrenees mountain dog here and he is just gorgeous.

We have many walkers here, but not really sure how many miles anyone is doing daily! When walking, we prefer to listen to the neighborhood sounds too. Some are on their cell phones, which we find hilarious.

Because my feet are generally painful I don't walk for exercise anymore. But as a youngster I was in the marching band and later on when I did walk for exercise, I usually liked to think of Sousa marches. I just listened to a bit of Mohair Sam by Charlie Rich. That's a pretty brisk pace! Have you noticed any physical effects from your walking program?

@JamesHxstatic Yes, my middle has expanded quite a bit since my feet became so painful. I refuse to diet; I generally lose a bunch of weight, then gain it back plus some.

It really was too bad about Bob. I am just back from my walk this morning, about 2.5 miles. It is already too hot to be out there at 9 AM now.

@JamesHxstatic Oh wow! It's a good thing you went walking early then. I was hoping to go earlier, but looks like I will have to squeeze it in sometime, now

That cadence of sound off is incredible. I never knew that any army would chant so while marching.

@JamesHxstatic "I had a gal in Kokomo. She went down to clean her flo" (floor) Sound off 1 2 Sound off 3 4 Cadence count—1 2 3 4, 1 2...34! "She had a home and then she left" You're right! "I had a home and then I left" You're right! "I'm not her and she's not me. I got a home in the Aarmyy" Sound off 1 2 etc. That Duckworth guy really started something, didn't he? I still prefer Sousa marches, LOL.

@JamesHxstatic The guy who did it in that clip, had a very good strong voice too. They must have chosen only people with a good strong voice for that job, am I right? (or is there some sort of selection criteria?)

Sorry to hear about Anne's brother in law. Condolences to the family. I'm very familiar with the cadence used for soldiers marching. I'm sure it keeps your steps in rhythm as you walk.

Thanks very much @Marylinda1225. Anne gets back this evening. It has been a tiring trip for her I know.

Can't recall the song. That was a long time ago but after listening to it agree it would make a good cadence measurement for jogging. "Sound off" is better left to the military.

Walking is good exercise. You won't see me with head phones on while I am walking. I like to be alert and always aware of what is going on around me.

So do I. I got a late start today, 8 AM and it is getting very hot already. But I did 2.5 miles.
