Be Careful With Your Water Bottles!

Clean your water bottles after using them or you risk drinking a mouth full of bacteria and fecal matter the next time. Fecal matter can be found anywhere. On IPhones, swimming water, toothbrushes, and shoes to name some examples. So, water bottles left unwashed can become a breeding ground for bacteria and poop particles. Doesn't matter if the bottles are plastic or metal, if they go days without cleaning they are prone to contamination. According to this study, refilled water bottles can carry as many if not more germs than a toilet seat. Your hands are a major culprit researchers found because they pick up germs from touching surfaces and transfer them to the water bottle. In addition, your mouth contains bacteria and although your own bacteria will not harm you, sharing a bottle with someone else might. If you are wondering which type bottle is the most bacteria resistant it is the stainless steel ones. Another advantage of this type bottle is they are not prone to cracking and keep germs out of an area where these bacterias can be found. Now that were all grossed out, I know I am, what is the best method to clean the bottles according to the researchers? This is what they recommend. Hand-wash your bottle with hot water and adding a teaspoon of unscented dish soap. After a few minutes, rinse the soapy water completely using warm water. I hope this article proves helpful. Most of us pobably knew the information presented in this study. You may have cleaning methods just as effective as this one which you might like to share. I hope you found something in this article that was new information for you that you did not know before. In my case, I will certainly be more diligent in cleaning out water bottles properly in the future. Source- Summarized from USA article by John Hafner Study- TreadmillReviews.net Photo- Getty Images

What method do you use just curious. I have a container with a filter on it that I run my tap water through.

Excellent reminder! I use a metal Kleen Kanteen (and a couple each day when I'm working) and run them through the dishwasher on the high-heat Sanitize setting every couple of days.

I do not refill water bottles. I buy bottled water and I use a glass to drink, that I always wash with hot water and dish soap and I dry it soon after, because it's wrong not to dry glasses and other kitchen items.

I was like you and did not wash the bottle every time. After reading the article no more forgetting, never realized how much bacteria can contaminate the bottle

I use stainless steel mugs for coffee too. And boiling hot water to wash any bottles, DB. Good to find out stainless steel is the most bacteria resistant bottle.

That's why I use a hydration pack. Of course, that bite valve is also in danger of bacteria and the like. Harder to clean as well.

I think we can only do the best we can to prevent germs from contaminating our stuff. As long as we are doing some kind of prevention.
