Runza? Bierocks? Casseroles

I made a big Runza casserole today. There are lots of recipes online. The casserole takes the easy way out for dough, using crescent rolls. To make it you put one roll of crescent dough in the bottom of your 9x13 pan, then fill the pan with a mixture of browned ground beef, onions, and shredded cabbage, with mushroom soup stirred in. Top the filling with shredded cheese, I used cheddar today but I have used Swiss and make a top crust of another tube of crescent rolls. I was really taking it easy and used chopped onions from the store and shredded cole slaw mix, which means I got some carrots in there for color. Real runza or bierrocks are made with a sweetened yeast dough, probably no soup and are made as individual meat filled hand pies or bread bowls. I think I would never do that. So that is one of the meals we will eat a couple of times this week.

@TiarasOceanView I had a supervisor who made delicious lentil burritos. Lentils might even work in this.

I never heard of bierocks until after I moved to Kansas, and then my son in law and another friend from Nebraska told me that they are called runza in Nebraska. Maybe you have heard of pasties? Upper peninsula of Michigan makes a meat pie like the Welsh miners did. It has potatoes and rutabaga instead of cabbage, though.

@GardenGerty I have heard of pasties. But even those are not seen around here. Interesting!

@paigea As my husband observes, almost every culture and region has some type of a hand held hot sandwich. . . tacos, burritos, pierogis too.

How long do you bake it and at what temperature? I think I'd like to try it here. Sounds like something that everyone would enjoy.

I bake mine at 350 until browned and the cheese inside melts. You have already cooked everything before assembling. I know you can search for Runza Casserole and Berocks casserole online and get a printable version.

This is really good to have on hand to put in lunch boxes as it heats up well too. It is that time of year for good hearty foods.

That sounds delicious! I may try to make this recipe, as it sounds like it is something I can do without burning down the kitchen (I'm a horrible cook! lol)

You can find a complete recipe easily online, and yes, it is pretty fool proof, but tastes good and someone else said, it is healthy.

Sounds pretty good. I am sure using the Coleslaw is easier and probably just as cheap.

I was just going to ask, I though to remember that bierocks are made with a yeast dough, similar to bread, but sweet. They are good.

Now that sounds good. Not sure I would use cheese in mine because I am allergic. I think there is other things I could use to top it off.
