50 dead in Las Vegas shooting?

I almost missed this before heading off to work. The shooter was something like 63-years-old, had 10 guns in his room, fired from a hotel room more than 30 stories up, and rained bullets down on concert-goers. Hundreds are injured, some trampled by fleeing concert-goers.
Islamic State has claimed responsibility, I saw in a headline (no time to read), but the guy's name makes him sound like a regular old American. He killed himself before the police could get to his hotel room. Have you heard anything further? I have to head to work.

@TheHorse They also said the United States averages 16 mass shootings a year. Humans have been killing each other since the beginning of time, I don't see this ever stopping. So sad.

@TheHorse ......I saw the story that evening on the news. I think these people are cowardly. Each time they kill and injure all these people and then just kill themselves as if that was the plan all along.

@celticeagle I'm going to assume he had some mental illness (beyond gambling) that we didn't know about.

It was a white American man who had absolutely no ties to the Islamic state at all. Unfortunately, right-wing trolls spread a ton of misinformation on Twitter, saying that four gunmen "dressed as terrorists" (what does that even mean?) were running through the crowds, that there were bomb covered cars discovered, etc.
Last I saw, 50 were killed and as many as 400 were hospitalized.

@spiderdust Nowhere is completely safe. A part of me is surprised that more crazy people don't "go off."

@TheHorse They do, we just don't hear about them as much. The shooting in Vegas wasn't even the only one that day, it was just the worst.

@TheHorse It's still not clear why he did this, last I saw. I had friends who were in the area at the time, but they all checked in as safe. Terrified, but safe.

Sad, isn't it? No, as far as I can tell from reading, he was just a plain-old-American - his family says he had no religious or political affiliations and hadn't been acting oddly. No one seems to have any idea why he did it.

@TheHorse Wow, it makes me wonder what was going through his mind as he opened fire... guess we'll never know. Why a country music festival? Why at all... but... it just seems so random

@joanwanjala I think we'll learn more over time.
