Hi MyLot! I remember telling you guys about Riverssance last year too! My belly dance troupe and I have been going the past 3 years. It's one of my favorite performance opportunities of the year. We got invited back for next year, so I am thrilled. Riverssance is a Renaissance Festival that happens yearly.
Sioux City, IA is about a 5 hour drive one way. The day began with a road trip. Our driver (one of the dancers in my troupe) - was flustered. It was nothing major, - just that she had sort of a rough time on the way to the car pool location. And it would seem that predicted how the event would go.
We got to the location, set up our tent. The tent is only for shade and resting purposes during the day, and I didn't think it needed, but, oh well I was out voted. Then we went to the pot luck. The pot luck is a special event the night before the festival opens. It's for everyone involved with the event. So it's fun to see people, meet some of the faces.
Well then we went back to our hotel. Our hotel was provided for us for performing. While I appreciate that it's free - the hotel is a real dive. No elevator, the peepholes on the doors are painted over, the power was off in our rooms until 3AM, at which time the lamps in our rooms came on , shocking us awake. At 5 AM there was a loud banging - I looked out the window to discover that a construction crew was digging up part of the parking lot, with jackhammers and everything. You know a place is bad when the maintenance man is overheard saying that he wishes it would collapse.
Got to the festival and had to deal with the tent being blown around by the wind.
The performances went well, small but nice audiences and I really love some of the other dancers and friends there. Nice event - I got to walk around, look at the owls and birds of prey demonstration, horses, food, and homemade cream soda was wonderful. For some reason I just felt out of it, or in other words "wasn't feeling it". Maybe it was due to the lack of sleep.
Then evening came and we got ready for our light show - there are other performers with lights and fire and this year we had lit costume and everything. It was truly almost magical. We stayed and talked with one of our great friends.
Then we went out to Perkins to eat since it is open 24 hours. Going to Perkins in a mermaid costume was lots of fun.
This year we didn't explore the town as much which makes me sad. but we were too tired.
We went to bed laughing at the shoddy hotel.
We performed the next day, in spite of the rain. I hope the event had a good turn out - then we left for our 5 hour drive back home, which was filled with laughs.
I went out with my parents for something to eat later and got home.
Now Riverssance is over for another year. But we are invited back, so that thought makes me very happy.

So true, that was the main thing, I think. Lack of rest. Oh well :-)

Lol! It was interesting. Some people wouldn't make eye contact and others would talk - A lot of people working there knew it was riverssance...

Thanks! The hotel provided some laughs for the disaster of a place that it is

@just4him My one friend found it even funnier then I did. We usually went to bed laughing (room-mates)

@RubyHawk That's what I'm hoping.... actually seems like the harder we (dance troupe) tries, the worse it goes -- go figure

I like how you tell the good with the bad. People like to sugar coat things, including me.. Neat story. Sounds like a good experience overall.

Thanks! I try to mind that I don't go too far in either direction. (Good or bad) honestly though we had a great time laughing at the shoddy hotel. It was hilarious

I wanted to learn belly dancing 15 years ago .. maybe it's too late for me now ..lol..
That sure is bad when maintenance guy wishes that the place would just collapse..

Never too late! :-) I hope you get the chance to take some classes, or even videos online. :-)
Yeah that was priceless.... wow.... I felt bad for the people working at the hotel -- all their hard work in a place that requires such upkeep
