India has a mind boggling variety of hand looms in Cotton, Silk and Jute. Each state has its own special weave and color combinations and are very distinct. Handloom sarees , dress materials and furnishings are in great demand since they are natural fabrics and the dye used is got from nature like flowers, vegetables, certain colored soil called eco dye. They are preferred over synthetics because of the warm weather. I wear synthetics only during monsoons since they dry out faster and easier to maintain. I am listing out some of the popular and well known varieties of handlooms that each state specialises in Bengal - Tant, Jhamdani and Tangail Bihar - Tussar Madhya Pradesh - Maheshwari and Chanderi Tamilnadu - Dharmavaram, Kanjeevaram and Coimbatore Orissa - Sambhalpuri and Ikat Andhra - Pochumpalli and Kalamkari Uttar Pradesh - Banarsi Kerala- Kasavu Gujarat and Rajasthan - Bandini and Leheriya Karnataka- Udipi handlooms and Kasuthi These are some of the handlooms available and for those interested , it is obviously better to buy it from source . Whenever I visit handloom emporiums run by the respective state governments and the Central govt I see them packed with tourists. I feel it is because of the quality and affordability ..

You have beautiful designs and good quality cotton fabrics. I have bought several tablecloths made in India and I am very happy with them.

True , some of the designs are so very intricate and hand made by taking weeks or even months . They become treasured items although the poor artists are paid very little.

@TiarasOceanView Unfortunately Tiara, it is the middlemen who earn the most. Some NGOs and social workers are trying to help the artisans by giving them direct employment .

This is very beautiful. I have a shawl that looks like it. But I am not sure it is made by hand, it is likely to be made by the machines.

Most of the handloom materials are machine made now . It is only a few varieties that are hand made mainly by weavers who have looms at home

I think sarees are so beautiful. If I ever visited India, I would try to buy a few to bring home with me. I would just need to learn how to put one on, I think it needs to wrapped a certain way.
