Beating the heat, cooling the feet

Beating the heat by cooling the feet .... I took this shot in April 2012.

Ally loves standing in water on hot days. The tub she's in is a little small for her but she managed to get all four feet into it. Dogs can't sweat so when they get hot they need to be able to cool their foot pads. Does anyone in Mylot land know where they sell tubs like the one she's standing in? I need to try to find her a larger one but not too large.

What about a kiddie pool?

I used to buy those but after 5 years and each one being totally destroyed before the year was over I decided it was a waste of money. The tub in the photos is one of those Tuff Stuff Tubs or something like it, they last for years.

@rebelann Well then, how about one of those preformed pond liners?

If it's tough enough to withstand our dry hot climate it could work @BarBaraPrz I'll have to check one of them out in person to get a good look at one. You wouldn't believe how even those deck storage units look like after a few years in our climate, the sun is so intense when it gets up in the triple digits.

Yes, a larger one is needed. Not much movement there for Ally.

I was searching the web for the tub like she has but they aren't that wide so she's still not going to have a lot of room in it.

I've seen big metal ones - one of the local pet shops has horse supplies. But maybe that's too big?

@rebelann Trough - yah, I guess that's what I was thinking of. True - it would be hard to bring that home in your car ! I was thinking too of those big plastic thingies that they put beverages in for parties (not covered coolers ) . . . but that's cool you found the Tuff Stuff! Yah, I guess the splashing fun doesn't really do the deep cleaning.

Plus I'm not even sure she'd hold still for a real cleansing bath @much2say all I've ever done is let her take those fun summertime showers

I used to buy those metal ones but they don't last long either. The troughs used for large livestock is too big plus they don't fit in my car. I did find a product called Tuff Stuff Tubs which come in many sizes so all I need to do is find out either where they sell em or if they ship em. At least if I get just one more then in summer maybe I can actually wash Ally a little, those showers she takes when we're playing water sports don't really do much to clean her.

Is this a plastic tub? I think that the idea suggested by @BarBaraPrz about preformed ponds is the best.

It is much heavier than plastic. I've had the one Ally is standing in since 2009. I have been looking for more but they are not carried by a lot of stores here and the one I bought that one in no longer has them. It is not actually plastic per se it is made with polyurethane and is very sturdy.

Is that a small stock tank? I bought a heavy duty one for the pups. Leah lies in it like its her bath tub. I had it delivered cause my car is little- bought it on line.

I suppose that's a name for it, I think it's a Tuff Stuff Tub. I just found a site for Tuff Stuff Tubs which has various sizes. The one I want is 13 inches high, that should be tall enough for Ally to get good n wet when it's hot. I doubt she'd lay in it though.

Many big box stores or container stores may have just what you need for Ally.

Do you mean like Home Depot or something like that?

Unfortunately those types of plastic containers get severely brittle in our intense dry heat and eventually crumble into pieces @DianneN I have a lot of plastic bits and pieces around the yard from years ago before I realized that plastic and dry heat do not mix. Even those kiddie pools Walmart sells won't last beyond a few months, they just can't handle this kind of heat.

@rebelann Yes, and other big stores like Lowe's, Target, Walmart, etc. I was thinking of the under the bed plastic storage containers, too.

I got one in an oval shape that is the height of the one in the pic but holds 45 gallons @rebelan at the local farm & ranch supply store for $25. You may want to check a supply store where you are.

I've been doing that. I'd hoped to find one that was a little taller than the one in the pic but not so tall that Ally couldn't climb in comfortably. The one she's standing in is only 13" so I'm hopeing to find one at about 15" and maybe an oval shape would be better for her as well. The Tractor Supply Co. carries them but many are either too big and pricey or too small. I'm not giving up though, I just need to keep my eyes open for what I need.

@rebelann Yeah, the height of mine is 16' and trust me, if the raccoon's can get in it (thinking it's their swimming pool) so could Ally.

Ohhhh, yes, many people are not aware of that @responsiveme dogs also have to be able to pant if they get hot, it is how their bodies try to cool off as well.
