I made an exciting discovery tonight!

Me, my sister-in-law, Steve, Dad

So I went to a surprise birthday dinner for my youngest brother tonight about an hour away from where I live. It was a great time, two of my sisters were there, my brother Steve and his wife Danielle, and my Dad and his s/o Carilyn. Had a great time, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was festive, and my brother had NO clue what was happening until he got there and saw us waiting at a table for him. So anyway, I thought tonight would be a good opportunity for a Grand Experiment: I purposefully left my cell phone at home. My Dad, my sister Shirley, Carilyn and I all had a pleasant conversation on the way there. While I was there, I was enjoying catching up on events with family members. On the way home, more stimulating conversation. And when I got home, I found out: 1. Scar was still alive. 2. The house didn't explode or get blown away by a tornado. 3. Olney was still Olney. 4. My neighborhood looked exactly the same. 5. No one I knew died or went to the hospital. 6. There were no earth-shattering messages of importance waiting for my immediate attention on my phone. In short, I discovered life today is much the same as it was before the invention of mobile phones...and it is much easier to enjoy it without a phone begging for constant attention.. Make your own experiment...trying going out for an evening without your phone...you may find ity very enjoyable. I sure did.

I could have told all that - Scar would be alive, etc, etc. I wish a few more would leave their phones at home when they go out. Seriously though, did you think about it as in not having it? Get a bit anxious? I imagine some would feel their right hand had been removed.

People are so wrapped up in technology that it is becoming the new norm. Sadly whenever we have a family event most of the people there are on their phones for one reason or another. I carry mine with me for emergency purposes and to take a quick pick of something/someone. I find it rude and inconsiderate when I am socializing with someone and their focus is on their phone.

@JolietJake and you now have a picture to look back upon. Not many carry cameras with them to take a quick pic. Our cell phones are good for taking pics.

@JolietJake Cool! You have a big family like my dad (he's 15 of 16). I like big families although I doubt I could have the energy for one. Did you want a big family?

I don't need to do that experiment as I am not a big fan of being on a cell phone all the time.

I have a mobile phone but I very rarely have it with me when I go out except when I know that I may want to phone home or that someone may want to contact me (or that I may want to use the camera). Usually it sits by my bed either charging or quietly consuming battery waiting for someone to message me. That is a nice conversational and civilised looking photo. There is one thing in it, however, which is out of place. Can you spot it?

@LilyBeBack No. Actually, now that I look more closely, I see that the picture was probably taken in a restaurant (so the beanie on the young guy in the backgound wouldn't be out of place) rather than in a private house, so that the thing I'm thinking of would probably be considered 'normal' (at least, it would in almost any pub in the UK, though not so much in a restaurant)

Glad you had a great time. I do this experiment as well. Funny, nothing 'important' ever happens when I do not have my phone with me?

truth, cell, laptop, phone
If the truth is that I do not use a cell phone either, but I have a laptop and I have a cell phone for the old people and that's what I have.

My phone stays plugged into the wall and behaves itself (mostly). Doesn't nag me one bit. And, just as you found out, nothing happens when I'm not home.

I only take mine with me when I'm driving, just in case the car breaks down @JolietJake . Otherwise, I never use it.

Didn't life become simpler with the invention of the smart phone? I make sure I always have a cell phone with me. Never know what will come up. Also, I freak out when I go into my bag to get the phone but can't find it. But I think I can manage to be without a phone for some time. I use it more for FB, Internet, games, or apps, and not for calling.

Last week I`ve forgotten to take my phone with me while going outside of my home. When I was on job, I was thinking if it had fallen down on the road or I`ve thrown it in the bin with garbage. Finally, when I come back home I become glad and get relieved to see that it was lying on my bed.I was not tensed for my phone but for the information on my phone.

I also think the same I am one of the few people who do not have a cell phone, but a computer. Why will it be?
