Made in UK

We, travelers, are proud of the souvenirs made in UK. A friend just returned from his visit to London and he certainly thought of presents for his relatives and families. He bought some souvenirs on Oxford Street as he didn't know other shopping centers. He didn't pay heed to where the articles were made in. He found out that many of the presents he bought were made in China. A friend of his who got the present asked,"Why didn't you buy the presents made in UK?". "We can buy things made in China here in our city," he added.
When you visited a country, would you buy souveneers made in the country you visited?

He should have thanked him instead of saying that. Yes, you are right.

To be honest, it's pretty difficult to find anything made in the UK these days

You can find quite a lot which is very much designed in the UK - here in Cambridge, in fact (though it may be actually manufactured in the Far East). Nearly all smart phones and many other devices use a processor designed by ARM which is still a British multinational company, even though it's now part of the Japanese SoftBank group.
Of course, it would be very nice if they put a tiny picture of King's College Chapel on the chip and a miniscule line of text saying "A Souvenir Of Cambridge".

Unfortunately it's the case that the souvenirs that you buy in most Western countries are actually made in places like China or Taiwan or Korea where labour is much cheaper than it is here. That's a good thing, of course, for the economy of those countries but not for the tourist who wants something which is really made in the country they're visiting.
If you want a souvenir which is made in England, for example, you will probably have to choose something which doesn't have something like a picture of Tower Bridge and "A Present from London" stamped on it!
If I wanted to find something which didn't cost too much and was really made in the place I was visiting, I think I'd go to a local craft market or farmer's market and look for a picture made by a local artist of a local scene. Sometimes it is the artist him/herself who is selling the pictures and I'm quite sure that they would love to know that you were choosing their work as a memento of your visit because it was made locally. You never know, you could even make a friend!
I sometimes wonder why people buy souvenirs. I know that I have done so and I probably have a miniature Eiffel tower and a tiny pair of Dutch clogs attached to keyrings somewhere!

As @owlwing said the labor is cheap if it is made in other countries.

@yanzalong Oh yes, it's dirt cheap to have it made in China. Unfortunately, for the workers.

@AmbiePam Locally made products should be supported by local government as it would raise the pride of a country.

The funny thing is that many Indonesians bought articles made in their own country when they went to Middle East. They didn't realize that those things were made in their own country.

Yes I would, why buy souvenirs made in your own country? Sounds stupid to me

Yes, most people would choose locally made products. In the UK, locally made products are getting rare as mentioned by @Mike197602.

That's too bad he didn't think to check where the products were made. So much in America is made in China as well. Oddly, the state I find to have the most made in America products is Missouri.
