Favorite Side Projects #5 - Tin Machine

Musicians form side projects for many reasons, usually to satisfy a creative need to get music that does not fit their main band out there. Tin Machine's purpose was a bit different, however, and they are #5 in this countdown. Feeling a bit in need of rejuvenation after the critical failure of his album, Never Let Me Down, and subsequent Glass Spider tour (which was awesome, critics be damned,) David Bowie formed Tin Machine (Bowie on vocals, guitarist Reeves Gabrels, bassist Tony Sales, and drummer Hunt Sales) in 1988, releasing two studio and one live album before going their separate ways in 1992. Bowie was insistent that Tin Machine was an actual band instead of a "David Bowie and a backup band" project. All four wrote and profits were distributed equally. Each member gave interviews, and if Bowie was the interviewee, he made sure to bring another band member with him. Essentially, the hard rocking band transformed Bowie into an arena rock artist, a far cry from the mainstream popularity he had achieved in the 80's. I've linked to a live performance of the band's second single, "Under the God," in Japan. Frankly, it rocks! Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I vaguely recall Tin Machine. Great clip. I don't think I have ever seen Bowie so fearsome on stage.

Other than maybe a couple of rockers, this definitely rocks harder than his solo career.

Where did I go? I don't know this. Or is it because I was 7 years old when this happened.

The general consensus seems to be that most people don't remember or even know of it.

I love David Bowie, and I never heard of this. I knew he helped start Mott the Hoople, but I never heard of Tin Machine. That was really kind of him to include everyone as equals.

He was adamant that it was an actual band.

The Sales boys were related to radio and TV personality Soupy Sales, who had a popular kids show in the 60's and Soupy was known for getting pies thrown in his face. HIs side project helped to rejuvenate himself and his career.

@dgobucks226 - They are both great musicians. Bowie didn't exactly play with sub par talent during his career.

@teamfreak16 Your mention of Tin Machine peaked my interest as I knew of them and Bowie. When I saw the name Sales I thought it was cool that Soupy's kids wound up as musicians and with Bowie
