SEARS-iously.....

Earlier today I posted a discussion that featured a funny photo of signs on a local Sears store. The signs said that the store was closing, there were "discounts up to 70%" (just not on what I wanted), and even the fixtures were for sale...AND they were also hiring!
Behind the humor, though, is a sad saga of a company that simply did themselves in.
You millennials might not realize it, but once upon a time Sears was THE name in "department stores." If you couldn't get a Sears store credit card then you couldn't get credit, period. (That's where my personal credit started.) And, of course, the catalogs: for decades the joke was that the Sears & Roebuck catalog was toilet paper for the hillbillies and the poor.
But, as I mentioned in one of my replies (regarding how the item I wanted, even with a supposed "discount," was still overpriced), Sears basically destroyed itself by assuming that people would always be loyal, and that they could charge people anything and the customers would keep shopping there. (Not to mention that Sears -- with the exception of their Craftsman tools -- had a reputation for some really shoddy quality things.)
Enter Target, Meijer, Wally World, and a host of other department stores that sold quality merchandise at a lower price. (Oh, and they took other people's credit cards, too: for eons the only credit card you could use at Sears was a Sears store card!) But Sears doggedly held on to what had made them popular back in the 1930s.
As a result, it's likely they won't see 2030. They tried to merge with super-discount chain K-Mart, and yet they keep losing stores left and right (and most of the K-Marts in America are gone...I hate that, I bought my first LP in a K-Mart).
Target is modern. Even going out of business, Sears is still an old store.
Did you know the Sears catalog inspired a novelty song?
Song about the infamous Page 602 of the 1975 Sears Fall/Winter catalog. Page 602 contained two men modeling underwear, one wearing jockey shorts and the othe...

I just hate it that Sears will one day be just a thought in the same way Montgomery Wards is just sad memory.

Sears has been overpriced for a long time. JC Penney has done themselves in by going away from working people's prices to overpriced.

I remember Sears from when I was a kid. My mom would drag us there all the time, looking for boring items that we didn't care about.
*As for Kmart, WHY in the heck are they starting to disappear?? I've noticed that too.
I LOVE KMART. You don't know how many times I had some fancy event that I really, really, didn't wanna go to, and I'd stop in at Kmart the night before and find some kind of outfit at the last minute. They'd never let me down, I could always find something to wear there in the nick of time, and it didn't look junky! It really didn't. It better not be Walmart that is giving them trouble. I don't care for Walmart. And they stole the last part of their name from Kmart anyway.

i got in a big arguement with them.they kept waking up my dad on his deathbed, saying he owed them money, but wouldn't discuss it with me.
finally i said "i'm gonna be his executrix-you want it now,or you want it later!?"
he owed less than 30 bucks.
i was so pissed.i said i'll send you a check right now,and close the account immedietly.
they were "but he's been a customer 33 years"
shoulda thought of that, huh?you kept waking a veteran.
jerks.loyalty meant nothing.

We used to have two K-Marts here. Now one. Sears is still in the mall here. The old ones are going away though. Sad to see.

I'm not sure but I think we might still have a Kmart open, I'll have to take a close look if I'm in that area again. I like shopping Kmart.com sometimes but anymore I stick with Wally n Target. Sometimes I switch to Amazon if they have better prices on the cat food.

Back when I was a kid, when our town had no mall, no Walmart, no Target, no -- well, anything, really -- we had a Sears.
We still have a Sears (now with a mall attached, as our mall got added on to it) but I never shop there. Their stuff is overpriced. I wouldn't be surprised if our Sears closes soon; there's never many shoppers in there when I do wander in (usually just to use their bathroom when I'm at the mall). Our K-Mart went out of business a few years ago. You are right, Sears is an old store; they've never really tried to modernize to keep up with the times.

I'm amazed that the Sears near us is still in business. The clothes are out of style and it just feels like a business barely hanging on.

They needed to do more than get owned by kmart to stay in business. But there's still many of both stores. So one can hope something will change before they're all gone.. for the stores left anyways.

Never heard that before. Pretty funny.
Sears was my first credit card as well.
