Dominican Republic Vacation Experiences?

Has anyone ever traveled to the Domonican Republic and if so, where did you go? What was your experience like?
Me and my sister are in the process of trying to decide which warm destination to go to this February on our annual little trip. We usually stay at an all inclusive resort and take trips into the city or touristy areas a few times.
One resort we were looking at was in Punta Cana. Anyone ever been there? And are there any "must see" landscapes or touristy spots in the Dominican Republic you would suggest? Any advice appreciated.
Anyone else trying to plan their winter vacations?

I have only been on a cruise to the DR and we stayed quite close to where our ship was docked. Crime against tourist can be an issue and I suggest you read the state department information about travel to the DR. Most people suggest that you go to a resort and pretty much stay there.

@maezee A agree, I think as long as you don't wander off alone especially at night you should be safe. I would probably take an excursion with a group.

My daughter and her fiance went to Punta Cana last year and loved it. They said they would definitely go back. I will ask her more about it the next time I talk to her. I know they went on a few excursions while they were there.

My travelling days are over I think. Used to do lots in the past. Regardless, I have never travelled to DR. Hope you have a good trip there.

I haven't. I have only been in the Bahammas..and Bermuda. I would love to explore more of the Carribbean though.

No, but I have known 2 people who went, stayed at the resorts.
Hawaiian islands would be a nice Winter vacation for me.

I heard that Punta Cana is a nice place but I have never been there. If you like cold and snow and skiing, we are having a good year.
