It Wasn't Exactly a Bucket List Item, But I've Finally Done It!

Yes, you're reading this correctly. I'm almost 58 years old....and I've never rented a car. We have a conference next month, and as I can't fly (this old angel's wings have been clipped ) I'm going to drive it. And, as I have a lease I don't want to pile 3,000 miles on my car to drive there and back. So, today, for the first time ever, I went to the Budget/Avis office near the airport and reserved a car. I got a small SUV, which is what I drive. I figure the price is pretty good for two weeks. It could be a total ripoff, but what do I know. I've never rented a car before. Traveling can only mean one song:
Yes it's that song from National Lampoons Vacation!!.........Great!

And I thought you meant you had scored tickets to the Starland Vocal Band reunion concert tour.

No, darn it all, the bathroom stall the show was being held in was sold out before I found out about the tour.

Me neither, sure it is a handy thing, but have to say not liking the rent a tool society they trying to start because everything is so expensive. Like they have rent a ladder from a neighbor for a day and stuff. Easy walk over to my neighbors and ask to borrow it and is free and will do the same for them because that what neighbors do, Capitalism is getting bad and if they keep it up will be in the same discussion as socialism and communism. i keep trying to tell them but they not listening. Glad you had fun with it though, what life should be about.

The only time I've had another car is the ol' dealer loaner while my car was being repaired (and that's so rare that I can't even remember the last time it happened...it's been a good ten year since I saw anything but the Honda "H" on my steering wheel!). I don't know if the price is good or not. I'm sure my boss will tell me when I let him know (since the company is going to reimburse me)...and I might end up with a bicycle and roller skates. (Wait, wasn't that a song? And a really bad one at that??)

My brother is the one who suggested it to me. He said if something happens to their car (e.g., it breaks down), you call them, and they come and get you, give you another car, and the problems are their worry. If we get a summer hiatus again this year I'm hoping to go out west (all but one of the states I've never been to are western). I'll be doing that in my car (I'm drawing up plans to build a sleeping platform in it so I don't have to spend $120 a night for the road trip).

@FourWalls Yes I would love a mini van for road trips, RV parks are cheap by the night and most have showers. I did that one year.

I have managed to get many items off my bucket list this year. Glad you were able to reduce some worry and get a car.

That sounds a good idea - to put the miles up on someone else's car I mean.

I've been hearing Holiday Road on car commercials every other hour for the last week! The song has grown on me so it's a thumbs up! Enjoy your rental
