It is Raining in California

Rain map from NBC
Laguna Woods, California

After historically large fires, Southern California is now getting drenched by rain. It is supposed to be even heavier tomorrow than it is right now, which could cause mudslides in the areas where the fires burned off the foliage. We really need the rain, though. So, as long as no one gets hurt, we all need to hang in there and enjoy it. Let it pour, let it pour, let it pour! (But please stay safe, everyone!)

Its been a warm winter here so far- rain not snow. Only huge issue is that the nights freeze and after the day's rain, well, its not a funny morning commute. I'm glad you are getting rain.

@DeborahDiane Oh for sure rain is not always nice. One night I was this side of being a traffic incident due to hard rain that reminded me of being in a car wash but I was driving fast with cars all around me.

@sallypup - We are thankful for the rain, but it can cause problems here, too, especially during the morning commute.

@sallypup - That must have been frightening. I remember when we lived in Texas we had to pull over under an overpass because we could not even see the cars ahead of us, the rain was coming down so hard. It was terrifying!

The Lake Charles area has had some light rain in the past two days which is needed. I just hope that the rain in California does not harm anyone either after the tragic events of the fires in that state have devastated the region.

@Deepizzaguy - Thank you! I hope the rain does not make things worse for people in the burn areas. They have already suffered enough.

@DeborahDiane I agree with you. I hope that the people affected in the area do NOT get anymore bad luck. It has been so bad already for them.

I have wanted the rain for so long - but oh the mud/landslides have been on my mind too. The fires have only been put out pretty recently. I do hope everyone stays safe!!

@much2say - Me, too. The mudslides can be terrible, but we really need the rain. It seems like there is no way to win!

Rain is good as long as you don't get too much where it causes problems. We're dealing with a wintry mix today of ice and snow

Brrr! They say the local mountains will get ice and snow, but not down here where we live. Stay warm and dry!

But the rain has been little more than steady drops not that downpour to help the drought meter.

@JohnRoberts - We received quite a bit this afternoon in Orange County, but it has stopped now. They say the big storm will hit tomorrow morning. As long as no one gets hurt, I hope it is enough to replenish our water supplies.

Hope you get the rain and hope it isn't that strong enough to cause damage.

@DeborahDiane I think it is nice to have brisk walking if the weather turned to be fine.

@Shavkat - Yes, that is a good idea. I am staying home today. The sun came out for a little while, and my husband and I went for a walk.

We had torrential rain during the night, the temperature is too high, up in the mountain they had serious problems. A condo has been buried by an avalanche.

@DeborahDiane I was looking at the news a couple of hours ago and I see that the situation is worsening in California, especially in the Santa Barbara area.

@DeborahDiane The temperature is too warm this year, so the risk of avalanches is greater. They have re-opened the roads and the railroad works this morning. I have seen the horrible photos from South California.

@LadyDuck - The rain has passed, but now they are finding bodies of people who were covered by mud while sleeping in their beds. It was horrifying. I saw they were evacuating people from Zermatt because of avalanche risk. One of our daughters went to school for a while in Zermatt and we visited her there. It is a charming town. I never thought about avalanches while we were there!

My mother used to say, "Everything in moderation." Mother Nature doesn't always go by that maxim. Here's hoping your rain is a blessing and not a problem.

@TheHorse - We are supposed to start getting rain tomorrow and it should last until Wednesday. We REALLY need it here in Southern California. We have only had 2 inches of rain in the past 11 months, so we're getting desperate. I hope we get more than a trace.

@DeborahDiane how low are your reservoirs before the rain? We had that problem several years ago, then the rain came steadily flooding (almost) our cities. Since then, we haven't bothered looking at the level of our reservoirs any more. These days, whenever the rain, gales, storms coming, we curse .

@DeborahDiane I saw the news vaguely when I turned on my cellphone, but when I tried search for it again, I couldn't see it anywhere (then I gave up, I was in and out of public transport at the time).

Thank you. Yes, heavy rain causes mudslides. We had 17 people die here, and 5 more are missing. It has been very sad.
