Children Should Be Nurtured, Not Tortured

A couple in Southern California who have 13 children, ranging in age from 2 to 29, has been charged with torture and child endangerment. They are being help on 9 Million $ bond. One of the older female children (17) was able to escape through a window and call for help.Police said that the house was filthy and some children were chained to furniture. The police also said that these children were obviously starved and smaller and looked much younger than their actual ages.
This is the second time in less than a year that I have heard of this type of thing. Why do they have so many children if they can't love and take care of them? Where are the grandparents? How did this go on for so long?
David and Louise Terpin are the names of the parents. They homeschooled their children. It is appalling to me that no neighbor, service person, or relative did anything about this before.
This is so sad and horrific. I am angered and feel so badly for these children.

It is so sad. I read about this earlier today.
I dont understand how no one ever saw anything wrong at all. It's not normal for kids to never be seen outside playing. My kids go outside to play with the kids that live around here after school every day-unless it's too cold or raining.
For kids to never be seen-something is wrong clearly.

I think a neighbor could have requested a wellness check on behalf of the children.

@josie_ I'm sure in pictures they looked too thin or not clean. If there were no pictures of the kids that should be a red flag too. Most parents take pictures of their kids and post them somewhere now and then.
Also they were never ever seen outside, except one time when they were very dirty.

I've been reading this train wreck story. I hate how home school often comes into this horror tales. My hubby and I home schooled our daughter. We were counter culture people. I hate that through this nasty tale home schooling is maligned. Other than that, hang those adults who did not act like parents by the highest tree. Or better yet, chain them to furniture and see how they like it.

Yes, I agree. Makes me wonder what kind of lives they came from.

I agree with you because children will be the future of our nation. Not to mention that these evil experiences will scar the children for a long time.

@celticeagle You are correct. If a parent wants a good child, raise them correctly with love.

There has been so many stories related to children being torture or mistreated. As a mother this makes me sad because I could never imagine hurting my child, she means the world to me.

It makes my heart ache when I hear of such things. I can see a couple like this having two or three children but 13?!

@celticeagle Yeah that is way too many and it's obvious they couldn't handle it. Idk why people do that on purpose just for attention. I feel like you can't physically give each child a decent amount of attention. There's no way.

Typical cult family. Sad they always have to involve innocent children in their bs.

@celticeagle I could be wrong about that, but with some of what I've been reading it makes sense. Those photos of them with all the children reminds me of that "The Family" cult that was around in the 60s in Australia minus the bleached blonde hair.

@celticeagle pretty horrible - just the size of the family meant the parents had to come and go to shops a lot - someone should have worked out that something was wrong

I heard about that. What a terrible story. Those parents should be jailed for life. Who knows what will happen to the kids with their bodies and probably their minds stunted as well.

I think those parents should be chained to furniture for life and see how it feels.

It's gotten to the point today where neighbors don't even know their neighbors @celticeagle and even if they did, they act like they shouldn't say anything. If it was me, oh you can bet I would have done something.

People are so afraid of making waves and being looked bad upon. I would rather that than those poor kids have to go through more.

@celticeagle The truly sad part is is that those kids will never be normal for the rest of their lives; even with counseling.

I'm glad that girl got out and called for help. She is 17 and the police said she looked like she was 10.

I wondered that too! I know some families live apart and long distance. But good lord what about phone calls?
Granted I'm the pot calling the kettle black. My kids have no association with 99% of their family. If my mom were alive shed visit every day. We just had that kind of relationship!

I can't imagine. I look back on times I have been short with my kids but never could I torture them. Even wanted to wringe a few necks at times. But I loved them and could never really hurt them.

@Daelii .....Same here. I remember one time my daughter went out of her usually playing area and I lost her. When I found her I spanked lightly at her bottom and it scared her and I both. That is the one and only time too. Those poor kids are going to have such a hard time.

This must be what I heard the tail end of on BBC News (I wasn't really paying attention). All I heard was "thirteen children doing well."
It's like X-Files crossed with Twillight Zone.
