Unexpected treasures 2 - brace and bit

Pencil drawing - brace and bit

I posted a coloured drawing that my mother did when she was twelve. Here is another pencil sketch of a brace and bit – though minus the bit. I don’t know how old she was when she did this but she left school at 14 and it would have been before she left school. I googled brace and bit as perhaps younger myLotters are not familiar with this once-common hand tool. It was used for boring holes in wood. Nowadays the holes would be drilled with an electric drill. I remember going out into the paddocks with my father while he spent several hours boring holes in fence-posts with a brace and bit. No wonder he had strong arms. Apparently the U-shape of the handle gives greater torque. The drill bit/augur usually had a wood screw thread which helped pull the bit into the wood. You pressed down on the handle with one hand and rotated the U-shaped piece with the other.

@judyev My father had one of those and I loved playing with it. So many trees where I lived in Africa have holes in them courtesy of my fascination with the brace and bit.

Some of the old tools were very ingenious but most required a fair bit of muscle power.

I remember that old fashioned hand drill, it's a vintage item now, we use to have one in the home with red wooden handle.

As you say, they are a vintage item now. They are probably collectible.

@JudyEv yes there are collectors who specializes in collecting tools, reminds me of coping saws, we use to use them a lot too in wood working when I was in grade school, think it's about as old as that drill. I dont see them around anymore. Your mother drew well for a 12 year old and good you preserved her drawing.

@JudyEv that is true. And maybe one day the modern tools would become absolute and turn into antique

I love handling some of these old tools. They seem almost to absorb the characters of those who worked with them.

@Madshadi I think the word you want is 'obsolete' but it doesn't matter.

@LadyDuck Oh dear. I guess you will need to clear out the cellar too before you sell the apartment. Perhaps a museum would like them.

I have an idea we still have my father's old one. It would have done a heap of work in its time.

@allen0187 No doubt there are dozens. It wasn't all that long ago - just a few decades.

Quite likely you never will. The electric drill has replaced the brace and bit.

I like the old tools too. Some are worn simply by being held in the hand over many hours.

In the old creamery where my grandfather turned it into his little workshop there was a hole bunch of those brace and bits. I didn't know that was what they were called though I always just thought of them as old manual drills. This drawing is amazing! It's so good that it looks like a drawing you would see in an old book before there were printed pages with photos. Man I wish I had talent like this!

Probably manual drill is another name for them. I have always known them as a brace and bit but it was usually slurred into one word - bracenbit.
