NO Not The Eyes Again!

Once when I was in Jacksonville Beach, Florida for a vacation I walked into one of the small motels that was located right on the beach and an older Indian couple ( India) was at the check in desk, I asked " How much for a room? I need one for 3 days and nights. They were sort of staring at me, then the man said " $90 per night." I replied " I`ll take it and handed him cash." He handed me the key and told me it was ocean front. Then he said "You have such kind eyes." and the woman with him nodded yes after he said that. I thanked them and went to crash I had just driven across the state. He gave me a room right on the beach with no neighbors! I could look out the window and watch the tides. The room was not fancy but very clean and that is all that mattered to me. Today..... I did good all day not getting into waiting room conversations, enjoying my book. Until ... Tony spoke to this elderly gentleman in the oncologist waiting room, he came over and sat by Tony, started talking. They called Tony right back, no waiting for him, So....... that left me. The poor old feller was lost, he said " Can I ask a few questions? This is new to us and we feel stupid." Hook. Line. Sinker! The one with the kind eyes! I said " sure" and the conversation was on about cancer, Lung cancer. The treatment and what I have learned how to handle Tony`s pain without pills, how to manipulate them to eat and get up and go. All that. He talked a little about growing up in Iowa, catching walleye and picking mushrooms. Then he left to go check on his wife. Whew! I get to get back to my oncologist waiting room ritual, a chocolate bar and my book. I had finished the chocolate and downed a few chapters of the novel when he came back. This time sitting right next to me Seems he started a discussion about religion in the infusion room, and with Tony. That is not good. Because.... Now I am the target for this man to make me believe as he does, that I can handle by just agreeing and moving on. (Tony will argue you to death) what I cannot handle is someone sitting that close to me with stinking breath! I leaned over as far as I could get, I was about to excuse myself to check on Tony when Tony walked out of the back.... Thank God! I jumped up and gathered my things from the seat on the other side of me, said my goodbyes and well wishes and took off. My lesson is learned! Sit in the last chair and use the next one over for my purse, book and drink, and whatever else I dragged with me for the day. I also need to pack sunglasses. How was your day?

I don't have kind eyes. I have intimidating ones and people stay away from me coz they're too scared of me.

The problem with labtops is that people are more curious about them but cell phones they all know and for some reason they just don't bother you when you're texting or talking to a friend @andriaperry just fake it is all.

Kind eyes. That describes my dad's wife. Your kind eyes probably make people want to talk to you. But boy would I have trouble with someone's bad breath.

I am approachable. I must look trustworthy. A few years ago when my daughter and I were stranded at JFK overnight....we had a woman traveling from India ask for the "room" beside us.....a young man, travelling from Australia asked for the "room" near our feet. Later a young girl from Saudi Arabia asked for our help in finding out where she had to go. Why us, out of the thousands of people stranded that night? You need to get into your book quickly....and then ignore the world around you.

Children always flocked to my mother and she said it was because she 'had kind eyes - like a cow'. I'll never know where she got that belief from but I guess cows do have nice eyes.

I think if the man was observant enough and notice you brought along a novel, that meant you didn't want to be bothered with small talk and nothing could be a more turn off than having to face a person with bad breath. Ugh! I use to tell religious fanatics before they start preaching religion to me that I was an atheist but that seem to encourage them more.

@josie_ Try telling them you're a Satanist. That usually scares them away.

He did not know the routine, the rest of us did and told him. I been doing this now for almost 2 years, I learn fast because I ask the medical staff a million questions. Some do not know to do that.

Ugh, gross! I hate when people do that. I don't mind helping them if they need advice or something but I hate when they take it as an opportunity to plop down right next to me and strike up a conversation I'm not interested in having. And bad breath! That's the worse. My dad wears dentures and his breath always stinks. I hate sitting next to him and having him talk to me. I wonder how they can't notice how foul their breath is, or if they are aware of it at all. I won't talk religion with anyone, especially not a stranger trying to convert me. I can be pretty rude when it comes to that.

@andriaperry We've told him (many times -- my mom is always on him about it) and he ignores it. We also tell him he needs to wear deodorant and shower more often but he acts all offended. He's been talked to at work about his hygiene problems but he seems oblivious to it.

I would tell my dad, or mom, so that could be fixed. I could not let my father walk around stinking,

My eyes get talked about, because they're a strange color. Do you wear contacts? I've heard that question about 100 times. When I'm in a waiting room, I love to read. A couple different times there was a mother with a child, reading a children's book out loud. So instead of reading, I just glanced through a magazine. There's always a TV on in one corner, usually set on the home remodeling show, which isn't too bad. I'd much rather bury my thoughts inside a very good story.

@andriaperry I'm sure he was very scared and freaked out, but he should seek a professional with his questions and not a layman(I was going to say mortal, but I'm not sure you are a mortal with all the stuff you get done everyday).

LOL you are so funny! The doctors do not talk about how bad the pain is, how the caretaker has to hear the cries of the cancer patient and does not know how to help. And, that is what I talk about, not treatment but care after the treatment.

Oh, the plague of the "face readers." They tend to think I look kind when what's actually going through my head is "how to edge away before a conversation starts," and look "fierce" when my interest finally is engaged. The mere thought of someone trying to read my face now puts me off. Who wants to get into a conversation where the rule is that one *must* be uninterested? (Yes, it's a physical, to some extent even unconsciously racist thing. I have big brown eyes and heavy black eyebrows.)

I think that is so sweet you gave him the advice! I think after that he should have left you alone though. It drives me nuts when I am sitting trying to read and people in the waiting rooms or whoever I am reading talk to me.
