Amazon At It Again

I'm either getting too old or all this 'new tech stuff' is driving me crazy. Grocery stores have changed a lot over the years; from cashiers actually keying into the register the price of an item to sliding the bar code across a scanner. From paying in cash, to swiping a card. From a sacker bagging your groceries to you doing it yourself. Well now Amazon has created the first totally automated store in Seattle; where there are no checkout lines or registers; it's all done with a swipe of an app on your phone. My question is: if this takes off, there will be no need for employees; except maybe somebody to stock the shelves. What if you have a problem? Is there going to be anybody there to help? Nothing like helping the unemployment lines to get longer though is there! I just can't wait until robots flip burgers at McDonalds.

People want higher wages and businesses don't want to pay that. Robots work for free and do not need benefits or vacations. Even stockers for stores will be replaced with robots. They are experimenting with that now. It is a sad state of affairs and will result in the loss of thousands or millions of jobs.

@nanette64 It will always work out somehow. No matter how bad it gets, there is always a brighter day around the corner.

Now that sounds a bit extreme for me. Sometimes my only entertainment or chance of getting out of the house is going to the supermarket. I would hate this. We have some piled up snow and I am just looking forward to when the snow is almost gone and I can get to the library which is a long walk and finally get into the city where I have not been for ages since I live in the suburbs. I certainly don't need more reasons to stay at home.

We always had to bag grocery ourselves, this service never existed in Europe. Surely they need real people to stock the shelves and to monitor the area just in case a customer needs help. Of course all this will cause more unemployed in the long run.

I never use our self-serve counters in the groceries. Let alone amazon-tech. I''d probably never set foot in their mega-shops.

It's all nutty to me @Plethos . There will come a time when 'humans' won't even be a necessity.

I know they have robots that clean house and ones who can serve you, so I imagine with minimum wage increases a robot flipping burgers may not be out of the question. As for Amazon, they will probably have a staff which deals with help questions. Although, I do not do apps so I guess I will have to get my groceries somewhere else.

I'm not sure I like all this stuff either, so I have to get their app to be able to shop at their store, guess I wont be going there. I'm sure they have people there to help and I'm guessing security to make sure people are not stealing.
