Janice Dimitriou and her husband were in Highlands North Carolina in September since they evacuated from their home in Pelican Bay in Florida due to Hurricane Irma bearing down on their city in September. To make matters worse for Janice, her pet cat Turbo left a hotel room and went into the woods before his owners and himself were going back to Florida. Three months later, Janice received a telephone call from Jim Grove who claimed he saw the cat that fit the description of Turbo around Christmas time. After the good news that Turbo had been found inside a store that had a sign that claimed a cat that was missing, Janice and her husband then traveled 1,100 miles to reunite with their cat Turbo. After Janice reunited back to her home in Florida with her cat Turbo and her other pet cat Pumpkin, she thanked Jim Grove for taking care of her cat during the cold weather by giving Turbo water and food during the time that Turbo was homeless and in the mountain. A veterinarian cleared Turbo to return home after being in the cold weather for three months. It also helped that Janice did alert everyone in the Highlands area that her pet was lost. Not to mention the power of social media.

Wow! I'm so happy Turbo was safe and returned. Personally, I would have stayed at that hotel and searched every day until I found my cat.

That is true since sometimes cats never return to their owners after getting lost.

@Deepizzaguy - i know that very well. When i lived in san bernardino, a lot of people lost pets during the waterman fire. An orange tabby made himself at home with me, he smelled like smoke the first day i saw him and covered in a little bit of soot

I love these stories so much. I noticed last year, while watching the coverage of Harvey from Houston TV stations online, that more and more shelters are starting to allow people to bring pets with them. I think the “powers that be” have realized that the majority of people who don’t evacuate stay home simply because of the ‘no pets” sign on the shelter doors.

That is good to know that the shelters are welcoming people and their pets during disasters.

That is such a good news story. Our local FB group has been instrumental in locating a number of lost owners and pets and reuniting them.
