Gee, what was I doing at the age of seven? Oh, I know, getting Buck Owens records for Christmas! This was a pivotal year in my life: in 1967 we went on vacation through Alabama, and stopped at the USS Alabama in Mobile. That was the day my brother decided to join the Navy. And me, being the dutiful kid sister, followed in his footsteps later. Also in 1967 we had a lot of big #1 songs, and here's one of them. 1967 (Pop): I'm a Believer - Monkees This isn't only a big #1 song from 1967, it's an all-time hit. It ranks up there in the "most covered songs" category. Vic Reeves and EMF did a version in England in the mid-90s, and Smash Mouth covered it in the early 2000s. One thing for certain: this song pretty much set Neil Diamond up for life. The Monkees, the "pre-fab four," weren't the greatest band on earth (if you watch the video below you'll see they were pretty woeful at mimicking playing their instruments for the video [save for Mike Nesmith, who actually could play and sing and write when the group was put together]), but they were fun and innocent. They were, if you think about it, the last "fun and innocent" act of the 60s, as acts turned more to "adult" themes and music. I'm a Believer Written by Neil Diamond Recorded by the Monkees From More of the Monkees, 1966 #1 for seven weeks, 1966-67 Ah, love was out to get me:
THE MONKEES - I'M A BELIEVER -1966 LIVE Original (HQ-856X480) Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith, David Jones (RIP) I thought love was only true in fa...

I liked that song but my generation considered their music for teenyboppers at the time. OMG, you iz a teenybopper.

Guilty as charged. I did a teenybopper countdown not too long ago.

@rebelann -- that's okay, what I post is rarely worth seeing. My #1 bubblegum song:
It's time to kick this bubblegum stuff to the curb! I know a lot of you are saying 'good riddance,' too! I'm closing out with a song that I see on most lists...

I am a child of the 60s/70s and I remember rushing home from town on a Saturday afternoon to watch the Monkees. I loved Davy Jones the best and my friend and I used to sing along to all their hits.

I have been a Monkeemaniac all my life. I don't remember a time without them. My mom was a fan when she was a little girl in the '60s, and when they had their reunion in the '80s and were being played on reruns, my sister and I discovered them. I even have a Monkees tattoo and I met Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork -- they are both very nice. They represent innocent fun to me, and you are definitely right about them being the last fun and innocent act of the '60s. They may not be the greatest band (that wasn't a band, but became a band) that ever was, but they are one of my all-time favorites.

Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz sang lead on this. I was always surprised in a good way the number of songs he sang lead on. Dolenz also handled lead vocals on "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Mary Mary" and "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." From the TV show I always thought front man Davey Jones sang lead on almost every big song they had.

You probably already know that Mike Nesmith's mom invented Liquid Paper, but maybe someone who doesn't will read this.
