Depression, Anxiety and Stress Can Cause Dementia

Along with the proper diet, exercise, seven or more hours of quality sleep, and an active social calendar, I have learned in my Brain Health class that it is important to deal with depression, anxiety and stress in order to avoid dementia.
The symptoms of depression in an older adult may be difficult to diagnose. While a younger adult may be visibly sad, seem agitated or have angry outbursts, an older adult may have these symptoms:
Slow thinking, memory difficulties or personality changes
Complaints about physical aches and pains
Unexplained fatigue
Loss of appetite
Sleep problems
Tendency to isolate ... the desire to stay at home
Suicidal thinking or feelings, especially in older men
The symptoms can be complicated if the person is self-medicating with alcohol or the overuse of drugs.
What to do if you or the older adults in your family experience the above symptoms:
Do not wait to see what happens; see a doctor as soon as possible.
Ask the doctor to rule out any medical explanation for the symptoms.
Anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication can make a major difference.
Therapists can also help, especially in combination with the medications.
In addition, a depressed or anxious person may benefit from hobbies they enjoy, getting a pet, learning relaxation techniques to reduce stress, taking yoga, or trying mindful meditation.
If you hope to avoid having dementia as you age, you need to take care of yourself in all aspects of your life, including dealing with your stress, depression or anxiety.

@DeborahDiane Some people are more sensible and they worry a lot even for smaller problems. Impossible not to feel stressed during some events of our life.

@LadyDuck - I think it is normal to feel stressed, sad and worried sometimes. However, some people seem to feel that way all the time, and that can be very bad for them.

@DeborahDiane Yes, doctor says that she can recover from having a theraphy.

You cannot change your life too fast, but perhaps you could do a little at a time. Try to go to one activity a week or, if that is too much, one a month. Gradually increase the time you spend with people you care about and enjoy being with. That is all it would take to make a real difference.

My mum had dementia but I think in her it was genetic as she was a happy person generally and lead a healthy life. Her dad however had Alzheimers, her older brother had dementia and her surviving brother is now in his 80s and having memory problems.
Dementia was unheard of years ago because people didn't live such long lives as they do now. The increased life span has brought with it new problems.

@DeborahDiane Me neither. Mum had a terrible quality of life at the end and she was fully of anxiety without really knowing why she felt like it. Although I was sad when she went I was also glad she was at peace.

@sprite1950 - I understand. It was like that for my mother, too. She was so unhappy and confused during the last few years, I was glad she was at peace when she passed away.

@sprite1950 - I agree that longer lifespans have brought new problems. I do not want to live to be very elderly, if I will end up with memory problems as bad as what my mother had!

@DianneN - Every week I learn something new in this program. I knew people should get their depression treated, for many reasons, but I never knew about the relationship between depression and dementia. This has been a fascinating class.

@just4him - I was fascinated to learn that the symptoms of depression in the elderly can be different from the symptoms in younger adults. It was eye-opening.

@just4him - You have such a cheery smile in your picture, I can't imagine that you are depressed. I agree that some of the listed symptoms are quite common. I think we should only worry if we see several of the symptoms, or they are extreme.

@dya80dya - I do not want to give your another reason to feel anxious. You should see your doctor and find out if a medication could help you. Then, you may want to try some of the other suggestions in this article.
