When enough is enough...

I've mentioned before that Scar has more Cattitude™ than any cat I have ever seen...but I've never really talked about how vicious he can be. Yesterday while we were out walking I turned my head for a minute...and he spied another cat and was off. I caught up with him (the other cat escaped) and he was still pretty much in 'kill' mode and didn't want to come back to the yard...so instead of dragging him by the lead, I picked him up by the scruff of the neck and carried him home. Where I set him down, walked away 4 steps...and he launched and attacked my leg. This is what it looked like 5 minutes later after I cleaned all the blood off...and this was done through the material of the pants I was wearing (sweatpants). I'm going to have to get him neutered I guess, although I know from experience that doesn't always get rid of the aggressive tendencies of some cats. But this has simply got to stop. I'd hate to take him to the pound, but I just can't abide with this much longer even though I do care for him quite a bit.

Oh, owie-oomie @JolietJake . Neutering will help; even though he is territorial. Maybe by picking him up by the scruff, he thought you were another cat attacking him since when they go into fight mode, they are extremely focused. I have more scars on my arms and hands than you can count from all of my different cats. Even if I don't think I'm playing too rough with them, a claw will become embedded and I'll start bleeding.

Once they are in fight mode I think they don't even realize what is happening and think it's another cat touching them...

OMG, that's awful. I've always neutered my boys early so I didn't have this problem. Plus both the male cats I've owned had sweet tempers and didn't want to fight either me or other kritters .... I think that having dogs around helped keep intruder cats away as well. I wish I had advice for you, but that isn't the case. Ummm, if you do decide you can't keep him maybe you can talk to some farmers about keeping him as a barn cat, they usually want mousers and I'll bet scar would be good at that ..... after he's killed all the other boy cats of course.

I'd chop his yahoos off (then see if Andrew Zimmern will eat them on a dare ). That's much better than losing him.

That is just too much. It looks like it will take a bit to heal, I'm hoping that it doesn't sting too badly now that you've got it cleaned up. Hopefully with a little polysporin on it at night will help it scab over and eventually heal. I hope that you scratched him back!

@JolietJake There is nothing wrong with discipline, especially when you are reeling over the pain that that had to have caused......damned Scar.

I hate to say it really amazing between a dog that accidently bites you and what a cat just natural. I have had the biggest bully of them all 115 pound giant but only you can tell if he showed remorse. That guy did every time and he still paid. One of the few times karma worked but not really was but was for him. Maninmal paid the price. ,

@JolietJake That was dumb comment went a bit overboard. My point is if you cannot live as friends no point in living with him. Do not turn him in, will put him to sleep, he is obviously a guy, one of the few that cannot be tamed. I really did tell my favorite bartender that, As much as everyone may hate what I have to say. Think he is saying wants to be free like no other and bet you JJ he will still visit. Probably more often than you would like. Great thing about that is majestic and free of mind you really get to see. Their eyes just clearer. Dogs do not have that.

That does look nasty. If he's not neutered doesn't he spray everywhere? I always had my male cats done for that reason.

@JolietJake If you have him neutered he probably won't do that any more but I'm not sure about the aggression. My sister used to have a Persian cat which attacked certain people as they passed him. He was ok with me but most people were scared of him!

was it the gray cat? how far away were they? so those are bites, not just claws?

@JolietJake and with your neuropathy, i guess it wasn't that pleasant running after them. would trimming his claws help, or you'd rather not? it's frustrating when others don't follow the pet rules there.

@hereandthere I'd prefer not to trim his claws because he has got loose before and I do want him to be able to defend himself if necessary

It wasn't the big grey tom, it was a smaller one about a half-block away when he saw it and went after it. That is just from claws.

I don't think neutering would have much affect at this stage of his life. That needs to have been done when he was young, he'll be too set in his ways now. I hope your leg heals soon, it looks painful.

He's always had an attitude, which I have tried to dissuade him from, but this is the first time he went completely ape on me.

Getting him neutered will definitely help...I would never abandon my cat...March is actually mating period for cats and they go crazy when they see other cats.

Doesn't have anything to do with mating season though, Scar is like this all year round.

Oh my goodness, that is awful! I'm sorry, I know that must have stung so bad! Thank God my cat is super sweet, but this is why I have always been afraid of cats before we met Pebbles. Cats are so unpredictable-I dislike that very much.
