What if you know you are going to be stressed?

Do you know that you will be stressed if something does not go your way? If it is not an earthshaking problem, can you anticipate your reaction and calm yourself. That is something I am trying to learn. My kids I work with at school struggle with impulse control and managing their feelings. We try to teach them calming techniques they can do when they feel they are going out of control. We also ask them to use their words and talk about their feelings. I have some "anticipating" going on. I have expectations of what our trip will be like. Some things are not working out as I had wanted or planned. I am trying to talk about it in advance so I can get over it, without having a melt down. We can all learn to manage our expectations if we identify them and work with them.

It is a constant project, I know. I actually was doing this post as a way to help me with something I am irritated and disappointed about.

I am starting to learn the method of Taking a breath and saying, Get it done, fix it whatever the problem is, I don't like it but I have to deal with it. And it honestly does help. It is a little pessimistic, but then I know if the situation or whatever I am working on is over with, I can breath eagain and feel better. The most important thing is to just breathe.

It is hard sometimes, but does not have to be pessimistic. Of course when I was talking myself down last night I must admit, it was in a way. I was talking about all I would not get done.

@GardenGerty It isn't hard to breathe. It is harder to stop breathing. If you talk yourself down, give yourself something to talk yourself up with. I have bipolar disorder so I am haunted with something telling me I cannot do something. Take a deep breath and just get a grip on the situation. Just keep breathing.

I have the same problem. I waste energy worrying about stuff that usually works out in the end. I just I'm living a life of having no control. It started with getting sick and everything that happened after that I really had no control over any part of my life. And part of the illness is depression and anxiety so it is hard and something I need to work on. I need to have more faith.

Faith helps for those who have it. Like you I am very much NOT in control of my life. We cannot control other people, or our health, or their health or their circumstances. That is what I need to remember, but sometimes my surroundings make me crazy. I have "heard" you say the same thing.

Yes, it is. Yet some of the things we stress about turn out okay in the end.

I learned to do this a long time ago to calm myself before I had an asthma attack. It worked and now I use it to calm Tony when he cannot breathe.

That is very good. I am glad I do not have breathing issues. I get stressed about stuff and I do have to think about what is happening in my life and get it under control.

I always calm myself when I know I am going to have a stressful event. This is why people think I am never stressed and always find, that is far to be the truth.

Yes, I know we are surrounded by it. Some things are very major, others matter little, but our minds try to make them all equally important.

Good advice. It took me years to learn that many of the things I would get really anxious about mostly didn't happen. I had a sort of 'what if' mentality and if that got a good hold on a problem, the imagination kicked in with a whole heap of potential disasters.

I read many articles about stress relief and I try to practice their tips. But I think I still have to work on this.

We must be aware and work on these things. When things do not go my way I tend to escalate.

Our stress is caused by our reactions to certain circumstances. We only need to change our perspective in dealing with them. I find that those who are really stressed are the ones who take life too seriously. They don't know how to laugh at their own folly. Meditation always helps to reduce stress. :-)

I am one who takes many things seriously. Somewhere along the line I have forgotten how to play.
