A model village in Richmond, Tasmania

In about six weeks we will be leaving with our caravan and heading east. We’ll visit our son in Melbourne then put the car and caravan on the ferry and head for Tasmania for three weeks. We’ve been to Tasmania once before and really enjoyed touring the island in a hire car. Tasmania is very scenic and reminds me of England or Ireland as it has cooler, wetter climate than where we presently live. One of the places we’ll be returning to is the Georgian town of Richmond where there is an historical model village of the capital, Hobart. It shows the town as it was in 1820 and covers an area the size of two tennis courts. There are over 60 model buildings, 500+ figures and over 100 native myrtle bonsai trees. The photo is from our last visit. I wonder if it has changed much.

We have something similar 15 km from here, it is called Swiss Miniature. The park shows the reproduction of 120 Swiss famous buildings, the lakes, the Matterhorn mountain and many characters and plants. It's a nice place to visit in summer.

@JudyEv This Swiss park is very nice, clean (of course ), well maintained and on the shores of the lake Lugano.

It does look a lovely place. We also visited a 'mini Paris' somewhere in France. It was a bit run-down but still interesting to see.

It would be nice to create a 'small' town like this. Thanks for the good wishes. We are hoping to leave about the middle of May.

@nela13 We have done quite a lot of travelling which we couldn't have afforded without taking our bed and food along with us. I know caravanning doesn't suit everyone.

That is so neat. I would love to walk through those grounds and see how everything used to look on a miniature scale. Two tennis courts is a lot of area it covers. What a cool place to visit!

@JudyEv I’d love to see a video of the progression as it was created. I wonder how many men and women it took to make this.

It must have taken a lot of work to establish.

One needs to have a master plan for any city to develop sensibly. But that is not what is happening here in India. Every nook and corner is used to put up high rise buildings. Where I live I have to thank those three roads that skirt our property.

@JudyEv There are neighbours across those 3 roads. Yes. I have one neighbour where the compound wall separates us.

Does that mean you have no neighbours or neighbours on only one side?

@epiffanie Oh, just look at that! I'll keep my eyes open for it. If I find it, I'll have two - one for you and one for me - and I'll take a photo!

Do you remember the name of the cafe? If you don't I'll just have to have lemon meringue pie in all of them.

It will be interesting for you to revisit a tourist attraction. The historical model village is a vivid historical textbook and gives visitors a good picture of life over there in 1820.

It's interesting to see how much the city has changed and grown over the years.

This is similar to England really; it might have changed and perhaps with more area under it.

@judyev You always seem to be off somewhere!! It’s good not to let the grass grow under your feet. Enjoy Taz.

We should have started treading on the grass a bit sooner but I'm sure it's all part of some pre-ordained plan.

Tassie is the only state I have never visited. Hope to get there one day. If you have a spare day while you are in Melbourne, perhaps I could get the train through and we could catch up for coffee?

That's a lovely idea. Thanks. We'll have a week in Melbourne (two weekends with our son) so I'll keep you posted. We'll be looking to park our caravan relatively close to public transport although we will have our car this time.
