Good news from The Horse!

For years, my neighbor's balcony planters have been home to many broods of doves. She (my neighbor) is the mother of my young friend whom I write about often. The juvenile doves have them come over to my balcony for "flight school" with their fathers. But last year, the doves never showed up. There was one early brood, but it was attacked by blue jays and destroyed. Maybe word got around. This year, my neighbor has her first nest with eggs. It's in a relatively safe place, and we're hoping the eggs will turn into baby doves, which will turn into "students" on my balcony.

@mlgen1037 I think I have some pictures of juveniles on my balcony, basically ignoring me as I water my plants. I will look for them.

Aww, I wish some of the doves around here would nest where we could see them so well! We've got several regular visitors now who are stopping by regularly to eat the seed the sparrows dump out of the bird feeder, and I was able to coax one of the pudgy Eurasian collared doves down into the backyard with some loose seed last night. They're so much fun to watch! Do you happen to know what species of dove laid those eggs?

We call them mourning doves, but I don't know anything beyond that. They're brownish grey as adults, and have a distinctive (sad) call.

@TheHorse That does sound like a mourning dove. This is one of ours who's been hanging around recently. They're smaller than the Eurasian collared doves, but not quite as skittish.

Last years the doves made a nest on the balcony of my mom's apartment. I wonder if they will do the same this year. The baby doves were cute.

@TheHorse Here in Switzerland yes we have falcons and hawks. I was attacked by a falcon because i rushed out to save a dove. The dove and I were both safe, but I got a big scare.

That will be amazing if they get a nest full of doves. I never saw live doves and I would think they are beautiful.

You don't have mourning doves? I've always thought they were more common than some.

I can't remember if that brood survived. There were only a handful of students at my flight school this Spring. I like doves. They seem gentle and make a (to me) lovely sound when they fly.

@rebelann We have them every year here in Northern California. But the numbers vary widely year to year. I don't know why.

@TheHorse We had eggs too in a nest built under our entrance haging light only to be destroyed by some bigger bird. I was devastated.

That's something to be joyful about. When I was a kid I would really be excited finding egg nests, but that rarely happens.

Do the babies chirp? Our adult doves make more of a sad cooing sound. It's quite pretty.

@TheHorse I love hearing the doves. I stayed at my friends house in New Jersey last month and she had a tree where the doves were and it was outside my window. I love that sound. Down here we have 3-4 foot cranes. They chased me one day when I went out the door. I came right back in.

@JohnRoberts Ah, so you see the doves around, but don't know where their nests are. I am trying to figure out where the juveniles sleep when they're on my balcony for flight school. They are gone from my balcony by 9 PM.

We end up with all kinds of nests around here. My mom had a family of doves on her air conditioner last year, they made a nest in a quart basket she had on it. She got them so used to her she could go to the nest and peek in and they would just look at her. She has a way with birds.

It's so lovely to have birds around, and particularly babies. I have found a couple of nests in my garden, but no eggs. My friend used to have a family of sparrows who had a nest right over her front door. They made an awful mess, but she thought it was worth it to see them and the babies. I wonder whether the new owners of the house think the same. I hope they do.

@TheHorse Given that the house is on 7 acres of bushland, I would hope that they see it as beautiful, but people can be strange sometimes.
