My kingdom, my kingdom for a horse - as long as it's a Friesian

We recently attended an endurance ride at Collie, Western Australia, mainly to take photos of the competitors. When it comes to endurance riding, the most popular breed is the Arab and most of those who want to do well choose Arabs. If you ride as a ‘heavyweight’ you might need a horse with a bit more substance so an Arab cross might be chosen. There are very strict rules now governing these rides. There are checkpoints throughout the rides where vets check the temperature, respiration and pulse of each horse. They also listen to the gut sounds with their stethoscopes and check that the mucous membranes of the mouth are pink and healthy. Ideally, the horse will have a low heart-rate at rest as this means the horse will be more likely to past the various vet checks during a ride. When checked, the horse is trotted away from the vet and back to make sure it isn’t lame and he/she (the vet, not the horse) will run their hands over the animal checking for heat or any signs of flinching from a sore spot. But getting back to the breeds, one rider was riding a very eye-catching Friesian. This is a breed native to the Netherlands and is always black. I don’t think this one, Alfie, is a purebred but he is certainly a Friesian. They have a high head carriage and high action. They also have more ‘feathers’ at their heels than most other light breeds. You can see from the photo that he will cover a lot of ground in a short time. Because of their eye-catching appeal, Friesians are often used in films, either in carriages or carrying knights and their ladies.

I like to as well but when I'm out and about most of what I see is the same stuff I saw in my 20s so it's become mundane @JudyEv but here on Mylot I am finding all kinds of really new stuff to peak my interest.

@rebelann I have learnt so much here. It's all very well to read the news etc but you don't know how John Citizen copes - where he lives, the pattern of his life, etc. I've found that fascinating - connecting with 'real' people. I'd say 'ordinary' people but that sounds a bit like a put-down.

I'm glad you enjoyed the info. I always like to know as much as possible about what I'm seeing.

I will surely know the difference between chalk and cheese but not when it comes to horses. This guy has such a dignified pose is what I noticed.

Even if you know nothing about horses, this one has a real 'presence', doesn't he?

He certainly is a handsome looking horse! Is that a western or English saddle?

@DianneN Western type saddles were popular for a while as i think they were considered more comfortable to ride in but some were pretty heavy. They have kept the basic shape but pared down whatever they can to make the saddles lighter.

I can't tell from this angle. It could be specially adapted for endurance. They now make saddles which are as littleweight as possible. He looks to have a sheepskin 'seat' which many use and Western stirrups which have thick rubber pads on the bottom.

Not being a true horseperson- I am interested in this info. That horse in the photo is magnificent and I do see the feathering. This is a beautiful breed.

@JudyEv If you are a horse enthusiast, you should check out the Canadian TV series "Heartland."

That's one handsome horse and he looks quite powerful. I trust he passed the vet's exams with flying colors.

The horse's name is Alfie. I think he should have a much more dignified name really. He was with the group that did 20km a day for 3 days running so 60kms altogether. He had good results from the vet tests.

I am glad that there are strict rules to protect the horses. The Friesian horses are beautiful, black and shiny. They are strong horses, often used in battles in the Middle Age.

I'm not sure if I've ridden a Friesian or not. Of course, I'm partial to Morgans.

There aren't many Morgans in Australia but I know at least one that is into endurance. A lady north of Paynes Find has a stud too. Here's a link to her stud:

hmm, I wonder why my grandmother didn't wish for her knight to come proposing to her on a beautiful black horse like that? (He might have turned out to be better than the husband my grandmother ended up with , considering her future husband (a dreamer) did come proposing to her on a white horse, just like what she had wished for.)

Haha. I was going to say it's usually a shining knight on a WHITE horse who turns up to propose.
