When is an azalea not an azalea?

The answer is when it has funny flowers.
Some years ago a friend gave me two azaleas. I very quickly lost one meaning it died on me and the other one I nearly lost several times. However I have now moved it and am trying really hard to keep it alive. I was really pleased to see buds on it recently and lo and behold, we returned from one of our trips to find it had bloomed while we were away.
However, it doesn’t appear to be an azalea so I’ve never seen an azalea with flowers like this. So I guess I must have lost both my azaleas but have kept something else alive. I wonder what it is?

Those are lovely. I do not know what Azaleas are, though.

That clearly is not an aalea, although I don´t know what it is. Azaleas are difficult plants. They need acid soil and an amount of humidity that I don´t have where I live.

@JudyEv Many of my plants come from birds poo.

@marguicha That's a thought or kangaroo or rabbit poo. Only one problem - it's in a pot! Well, that makes sense too in a way - pooing in a pot.

It does look like an azalea plant from the leaves but I have seen several different types but never with flowers like that. Could be it is missing some type of nutrient or perhaps you just discovered a new species

@Freelanzer I'll add a close-up photo of the flowers although I've also put it under Anna's comment.

Azaleas are such pretty plants. I have them scattered about the yard in differing locations. Looks like another plant has horned in on those azaleas space? Your mystery plant would make a great case for the popular CSI TV show.

@JudyEv Yes, when the colors are in full bloom I'll have to show them off in a post. Gardening can be very rewarding.

Looks like a white powder puff to me. I have it in red. So you never got an azalea after all (lol)

Now that I know it's not an azalea I have no idea what it could be. Not that it matters too much.

I don't mean to be rude but even I knew it wasn't a dandelion!

I don't mind that it isn't an azalea. In fact, I thought it was pretty funny that I'd managed to grow one. And it seems I haven't managed it! lol
