Can you believe these two have covered over 17,000 kilometres together?

This lady doesn’t look mad, does she? And that is really just a joke. The reality is that, since 2005, she and her horse have travelled 17,475 kilometres (10,858 miles) competing in endurance rides. By that I mean that she had ridden that distance and her horse has carried her. No doubt, they’ve done at least that much again while training for these rides.
Frances’ horse is a purebred Arab gelding called Poseidon Moon although his stable name is Homer. They compete regularly in 80km rides (in one day) and sometimes in a 100km ride.
Can you see the red ribbon in his tail? This is usually worn by horses that might be likely to kick at another horse. However, in these rides, some people tail-gate but if they think a horse might kick they are more likely to keep their distance.

They would have bonded wouldn't they having travelled so many miles together.

@jaboUK I know they have endurance riding in Britain but I would guess it's a bit harder to find places to ride such distances. I rode a 50 mile in the 60s and we went from one town to another but now they send the riders out in a circle for the first 'leg' then perhaps out and back somewhere else for the second and perhaps reverse one track for the third depending on the length of the ride.

I think she is in her 60s now and lives about 280kms from Collie. Many of the riders are women and many come on their own so they drive and pull a float (horse-trailer). When they get there they set up a portable yard, carry water, probably sleep in the float, ride their 80kms and do all their own strapping along the way then pack it all up and drive (sometimes) miles home again. Some have a bit more in the way of mod cons than others but it's still a lot of work.

What an amazing distance to travel and what a brilliant idea to tie a red ribbon the horse's tail to warn people. We don't do that here.

@JudyEv A horse could do a lot of damage to a car!

@sprite1950 The roads used for endurance are often used by vehicles so the danger isn't great.

Homer doesn't kick. I didn't explain it very well. If people think he might kick they will be more careful not to crowd up behind it. Some riders, like car-drivers, aren't very considerate and 'tail-gate' much too close to another horse. The ribbon helps make them keep their distance a little.

Why do the horses have a stable name that is different from their other name?

Well, would you like to be called Jeffery Moffitt all the time? lol
Some of the stud names are very long and very hard to pronounce as in Deesham park Mon-Taj Navara. If you're calling your horse to come home for his dinner, a short name is much better and horses learn to recognise their stable names.

@JudyEv I've been called many names over the years, some good, some bad, but I answer to them all! lol
Yes, I know what you mean by having to continually call out a long or difficult to pronounce name.

So some ribbons in the tails for those with bad tempers
. (Reminded me of some girls in my old schools, they had the habit of kicking at boys suddenly. They were often the pretty ones, no ribbons though, but they kicked the boys regardless for teasing them.
