productive thrifting day

When the stepkids moved in, they came with very few of their belongings and we really needed to get them some clothes and shoes. My toddler is hitting a growth spurt and my elementary schooler also needed a few pairs of shorts (she's training for a 5K right now).
Today was the 50% off clothing and shoes sale at Savers (a thrift store chain in my area, it's also called Value Village in some other areas), so we went in to see what we could find for the kids. We ended up buying clothes for all 6 kids and some of the adults (including a dress and two tops for myself) for under $160. I didn't find as many pairs of suitable shoes as I needed, but we at least got 2 pairs for the older girl.
I feel pretty accomplished!

@LadyDuck Surely there are resale shops or charity shops even in your area?

I love going to the thrift store. You can find some really great clothes for cheap. I don't usually have much luck with shoes. They seem always to be the wrong size. Congrats on finding such great deals for everyone!!

Shoes are somewhat of a gamble, but sometimes I can find what I need. I have better luck finding good quality shoes at this one than I do at the Goodwill down the road. I think a lot of the department stores send their out of season clothing to this one, which is why I can find a lot of brand new or nearly new shoes there.

@morgoodie I don't go to Goodwill as often as I used to since Savers has been so wonderful for us. I've heard that Goodwill may be better for furniture than clothing.

@spiderdust The Goodwills near me aren't that great, but there is a thrift store called Volunteers of America that I find good things at and it is bigger than most other thrift stores. They have 50% off the entire store once in a while and I try to hit it up at that time.

We have charity shops in the UK. Well done for finding so many second hand clothes and a few shoes for your large family. My sister has an older daughter and when she out grows the clothing it is given to my young daughter. Her boys are too much older than my disabled son though. Primark is a cheap clothing store and we often buy children's clothes there. We get children's shoes at a low price shop called Shoe Zone.

Ah, yes! Another friend on here mentioned Primark being a good and inexpensive place for clothing.

I tend to mostly go to the larger chains, but I've sometimes found some awesome deals at some of the tiny local thrift stores, which are often connected to a church or some kind of benevolent society. When my daughter was small, I found a Pottery Barn wooden abacus there in nearly new condition for $7, I think. Pottery Barn sells it for $39.
The dress I bought for myself today cost me $6.75. It still had the Macy's tags on it for $79.99!

Your little one will love to learn and practice their ABCs with this must-have toy. Crafted from sturdy materials, it is painted with a water-based, child-safe paint. DETAILS THAT MATTER • Puzzle is made of pine wood and tea wood. • Finis…

I LOVE thrift stores, especially for the clothing finds. It is remarkable what you can find in stores like this, and at a fraction of the cost of buying new. One fun thing my wife and I like to do is to visit Goodwill stores in posher areas—those people donate some awesome stuff and we get them at massive bargains.

The stores swap their entire inventory with other stores each week too, so going there once a week or so is really useful.

@spiderdust Oh, I did not know they did that. But that's interesting. We have a Saver's around here as well, and my wife and I go there often. Good to know.

It really was. I didn't know they were having a 50% off sale this month until I got a notification about it, usually they just have them on 3-day weekends. This was excellent timing for us.

Usually they have these sales when they're trying to move out a lot of inventory to make room for new items. I expect they'll have another one around Memorial Day weekend.
