Early morning a young horse on the farm was reported with Colic yesterday . That is abdominal pain. He was about one year old.
Despite getting the treatment he was not getting settled, because of which he was thoroughly examined and to my shock I found a big herniation in his right scrotum which we call as Inguinal hernia that can be life threatening.
Having got confirmed with the help of ultra sound scanning I called our visiting surgeon who came in the evening to perform the emergency surgery.
It was much of tough job for to control his pain during the mean time with sedatives and pain killers.
However in the evening the horse was operated and about 14 feet intestine which herniated into the right scrotum has been pushed back into the abdomen and corrections were done!
Right now he is OK and hopefully he will recover soon to get back to his normal activities!
Presently bit busy with his post-operative care along with my other routines!
How was your yesterday? Thanks a lot!
Please respond your responses will be appreciated as usual! Thanks!

Thanks , Yes we have some or other sort of challenge every day as I am suppose to look after about 250 to 300 horses on the farm.
The got operated successfully and everything went on well and today he is looking bright and his clinical parameters are OK! That means within a time of two weeks he should be alright! Thanks dear friend @SIMPLYD!

Hope the little one will get well soon. I agree, it is difficult to take care of animals when they have health issues.
My day was ok and I had net problem for the last two days so I was inactive mostly here. There was storm at night but no calamities in our side.

It's horrible to see an animal in pain because they don't understand. I'm glad he is recovering and I'm sure he will do well under your care.

Yes, you are right hernia can be very painful and the animal suffers a lot! But with modern medications the animal can be sedated and the pain can be controlled till te time of surgery. Hopefully by next two weeks he must be alright! Thanks a lot for your sympathetic understanding and concern about the animals @sprite1950! Stay blessed!

hmmm, i was once an operating room nurse and i scrubbed in procedures like herniorrhaphy. the operation just takes about 15 minutes if our brilliant surgeon does it.
but herniorrhaphy on a horse i believe will take a longer period of time. was the horse maintained flat lying rather than standing?

Thanks a lot dear friend, I agree with you we need to understand the gestures and we need to rely more on clinical parameters because of this setback. Luckily this boy of our's is getting well and within a couple of weeks he should be alright! Thanks!

Yes, you are very correct @JudyEv! It is very important to find the case of hernia at initial stages, as the entrapped intestine can get gangrenous if it becomes late and unnoticed. Since there was no damage to the intestine and the surgery went on well, I think he will be alright within a couple of weeks.
I hope he can race normally as a three year old horse.
Yes, we do have races for two years in India, but then they are scheduled only after the month of November! Thanks a lot for your keen interest and response!

Yes, I can understand what you are saying...but they have their own gestures to express the distress and pain.Yes, here finding the problem at the appropriate time was important and because of that only we could save him. Yes, horses they understand and they have their own style of expressing the gratitude...then simply 'nicker' when they see you near by...(this sound they make when ever they are getting their food) and some times they lick you or gently massage your hand with their soft but strong lips! Thanks!
