Hummingbird Mother at Our Home

Just outside one of the doors to our house, I have a few little planters hanging from hooks. A hummingbird built a nest on one of the strings holding up the planters. A few weeks, she laid two eggs and, just this morning, we were able to use a mirror to peek inside and discovered that the eggs had hatched and two little baby hummingbirds are inside.
I know the photo above is blurry, but I could only take a photo of the mother on her nest from a distance and blow it up to make it larger.
She has been such a good mommy! She sits with her babies as much as possible and then flies off to get food for them once in a while. That is when we get to peek.
She has become very tolerant of my husband and me, but gets very upset when strangers come near, and buzzes around their heads. When we see someone approaching our door, we try to get them to come to our side door, but we don't always catch them in time!
She always returns to the nest after the excitement is over!

Happy Mother's day, Deborah. I am really in awe when birds get to build their nests on a house and then you can see them. We dont have those here.

we don't know if they have nests here (or maybe just don't see them) but birds always hang out here at our house, usually at the jackfruit tree. when it was cut down, they moved to the plants below it and to the roof.

@mlgen1037 - Hummingbirds are interesting. It is rare to see them sitting still, except when they are getting nectar and sitting on a nest!

@hereandthere Wow. I hope we those too here. I think the Maya birds do and they stay on those electrical wires of Meralco.

@hereandthere - Yes, I think it is interesting that she can tell when it is us, and when it is a stranger approaching the door. They are smarter than we realize!

How wonderful is that?
A Hummingbird´s nest right on your own doorstep.
She is a very good Mom and protects her family well.
Very protective and on the defense too very good Mom indeed.
So very lucky to have her by you.

I would say so too.
She has chosen your place for some reason so that must be a good sign.

@DeborahDiane They make the difference, some birds that come to eat at my feeders do not fly away when they see me, but they do if there are people they do not know.

@LadyDuck - Birds are much smarter than we realize. In fact, I think virtually all animals are smarter than we realize. We have little lizards that live in our part of California. They come out and sun themselves. They will let my little grandsons get so close they can reach out and touch them, but they run from adults. They can tell the difference!

@LadyDuck - It is amazing, isn't it? I think they know when the local residents are willing to leave them alone, but strangers make them nervous. I think it is amazing they can tell the difference!

@wolfgirl569 - I'm afraid to hold my phone above the nest to take a photo. I'm afraid it would upset the mother!

@JamesHxstatic - No, we don't have a hummingbird feeder. There are many in our neighborhood, so we didn't feel the need to add another one. I'm not sure why she picked our home to build a nest, but we feel blessed that she did!

@JamesHxstatic - I'm glad I got it when I did. Since that day, she has not been sitting on the nest as often. She has two babies in the nest and she mostly flies back and forth, feeding them!
